Thank you, so helpful to have other opinions/insights.

It's interesting that the Linton baptism has been highlighted.

As part of my efforts to identify William, I compiled a list of all William Morris' born Kent 1809-1815 and tried to exclude on basis of marriage/death records and census entries - I was left with a shortlist of about 16 possibilities which included  Linton baptism!

I had looked at this family and found that most stayed around the Maidstone area initially though some emigration to Australia but I couldn't find any records in the area for William so currently he is in the 'most likely' category and am going to focus my research on this Morris family.

Do you think its possible that the Milton birthplace recorded  on the 1851 census could be an error by enumerator?

Thanks so much for your help

Thanks all
Sorry, I should have called it Milton Regis not next to Sittingbourne in my original post but there's no Morris' there that I can find.

William was a labourer (1851) but did wonder about the Reculver connection not just the maritime aspect (Coastguard stations?) but because there was an extended family called Morris already in Reculver and though I've traced the family back  from early 1700s to mid 1800s, I've not been able to see likely parents for William.

Also- and this just adds to my confusion, William's granddaughter Eliza Hopkins marries a James Harlow who is in fact the GG grandson of a John Harlow and Hannah Morris who were both baptised, married and died at Reculver.

Not only did William get married in Elham but so did his eldest daughter Sarah (1860 John Hopkins)

I seem to have coincidences but can't find connections!

I did see the William Morris born Linton and the date fits but is a long way from Elham - do Milton and Linton sound sufficiently alike to be confused?

Thanks for your thoughts!

I am struggling to find the baptism for my GGG grandfather, William Morris.

I have only a few facts:

He married Sarah Crayford at Elham Kent in 1836 - so no father's name.

His children's baptisms suggest the family were living in Reculver from 1840, (1841 census for this parish missing) and wife Sarah buried there 1846.

In the 1851 census, William is still in Reculver, widower, age 39, birthplace 'Milton, Kent'. I've tried Milton, Sittingbourne and Milton, Gravesend + surrounding parishes but can't find any William Morris'  baptised 1809-1815,  nor even any likely families.

So I just wondered how much reliance I should put on the Milton connection, without the corroboration of subsequent census records?

Perhaps I should add that I can't confirm a death either, although by 1861, the family are dispersed, the eldest married (doesn't say father deceased on certificate) and the youngest are at sea, one went as a cabin boy in 1859, age 13.

How accurate have you found birthplace info in your experience?

Grateful for any insights

Hampshire & IOW Lookup Requests / Re: GUYATT in Hampshire England
« on: Friday 01 March 24 16:16 GMT (UK)  »
I have Guyatts from Hampshire in my tree and there's a father and son called Richard so maybe that's a family name?

There's a marriage at Winchester 7.10.1714 of Richard Gyat, shepherd,  'of Dean in the county of Southton' (Southampton) to Mary James 'of the same'.

Then baptisms:
Mary 30.1.1715 d. Richard Gyat and Mary his wife at Ashe (1.5 miles W of Deane)
Alice 10.3.1717 d Richard Gyat at Deane
Richard 10.7.1719 s. Richard Gyat at Deane

Mary 'wife of Richard Gyat' was buried at Deane 5.4.1740
Richard Guyatt 'of the Basingstoke, age 89' was buried at Deane 27.5.1772

Not sure how ' 'my' Guyatts are connected to those from Andover but thought the info might be of help to someone

Family History Beginners Board / Re: Help with Mary Foord/Ford of Sussex/Kent please

I really hadn't considered that so great to have fresh pair of eyes as I have got really bogged down.

I've seen the original entry in parish record for Nonington marriage but there is no information at all on status so Mary could indeed be a widow.

Time for a new line of enquiry

Thanks

Family History Beginners Board / Help with Mary Foord/Ford of Sussex/Kent please
« on: Friday 25 August 23 16:34 BST (UK)  »
I would very much appreciate any advice on finding the baptism of my 4xGgrandmother Mary Foord who married Henry Hadaway at Nonington, Kent on 12.10.1807, witness was Jemima Foord. Census records suggest she was born around 1786, and gives her birthplace as 'Sussex, N.K.'

I'm looking at all Mary Foord/Fords born around that time in Sussex and trying to eliminate by marriage or death but wondered if, in your experience any of the following information is significant?

1. Also married at Nonington was Abraham Foord to Sarah Baxter on 23.11.1800, witness Ann Foord. Census returns suggest Abraham was born around 1780 and gives his birthplace as 'Sussex, Newick'. I can't find a baptism for Abraham, possible parents were Abraham and Martha Ford who were married at Newick in 1776, twins Henry & James were baptised there in 1778.  Both Abraham and Martha were buried at Eythorne Baptist Church (3 miles from Nonington) in 1838 & 1821 respectively.

2. Mary called her youngest daughters, Jemima and Martha

3. Mary's son, Thomas Hadaway, was apprenticed to Abraham Foord (1841 census) at Eastry (4 miles from Nonington) and in 1847 married his daughter Mary Foord at the Wesleyan Chapel, Dover.

So lots of connections but I'm not sure of their importance?

I've also been wondering about the significance of:
a) marriage witnesses - were they usually siblings
b) Baptist faith - are names chosen at birth or later at baptism?

Various FTs on Ancestry suggest Mary, Jemima, Abraham & Ann were all the children of Abraham and Martha of Newick which would be great but sadly no evidence!

Any advice or encouragement very welcome!

I had found on Ancestry, the baptisms at Adwell from 1735 onwards, John, Frances etc.  but none before that date.

Thank you, I'll look again at Ancestry but first I need to renew my subscription which expired last week.

I tried negotiating a discount 'been a member since 2004 etc' but no joy.  I hoped if I waited a while they might come up with an offer, but nothing so far -  think I'll give it a few more days, but a bit frustrating now the search has moved on thanks to your input!

Thank you Queen of the West, amazing help and so speedy!

Yes, William and Ann were at Shiplake for the baptism of all but one of their children so fairly confident, the burial in 1814 is the right one.

I was interested in Robert & Mary Ravening of Adwell because of the dates of the baptism of their children and the repeated names in the two families but I only found 6 children, no Ann but the baptism you found is most definitely favourite.
You've made my evening!
Can I ask on which site you found this Ann's baptism?
Thanks again, Jill

Please could someone with access to the Sonning marriages check out the details for a marriage of William NEVILLE on 25.7.1756? The transcription I found (FindMyPast) gives the bride's name as Anne REVENEN but wondered if there were any more details available to help me track her down.

Sonning parish records are not among those Oxfordshire images available on Ancestry, so I can't look at the original, although I see OFHS has a CD of Sonning records. Is this because Sonning is now Berkshire and their parish records were transferred there and are only available to view at the Records Office Reading? Not sure if I've understood this correctly.

Ideally I would like to find  a baptism for Anne REVENEN! But I can't find anyone with that surname anywhere! However,   there are RAVENINGS in Bray, Berks and at various places (Pyrton, Crowell, Adwell) in Oxfordshire and Stone & Dinton in Buck so that's why I wondered about the marriage transcription accuracy.
