I understand Solomon Bockerah was buried near the current overseas liner terminal on the west side of Sydney Cove as the first Jew to be buried and identified as such by Rev Johnson. I’m not quite sure where I got that. There have been searches of this detail without definitive proof.

Thanks. I wasn’t sure where “St James” actually is or was. St James church in King St, plots around the church? I thought maybe Central Railway and then relocated. But the church sounds more feasible. I thought St John’s in parramatta was the oldest cemetery in Australia, where Ann Buckrel (Bockerah) is buried. St James may not have been a cemetery as such, just a convenient burial ground.

To Neale 1961, thanks for clearing that up but it does appear very strange that notes of death would be added at a later time, more than a year. Was it a running commentary then? I do see "escaped", which is hardly an entry on the high seas!! I hear what you are saying with the record of Solomon in the Register of Burials at Sydney Cove so I'll take it as read. I also see the newspaper entry, but I have always been careful using those as gospel. Now I must alert RJ Ryan who edited "The Second Fleet Convicts" who shows him as dying on the voyage. There may be many others wrongfully shown.

Hello to all Solomon Bockerah followers. I have been on his trail but surprisingly found in the NSW Archives a reference that shows he died on the voyage of the Scarborough (2). I have attached the record, Dd means died on voyage. This was sourced from the book "The Second Fleet Convicts. A comprehensive listing of convicts who sailed in HMS Guardian, Lady Juliana, Neptune, Scarborough and Surprise, edited by RJ Ryan, 1982. This was a complete surprise. It refers to the NSW Archives. Any thoughts?

Hello AmandaP, John Laurie married Sarah Bockerah in Sydney and died 25th June 1873 in Karaka Ferry (the sub-locale of Weymouth), (John & Sarah had 11 children) son Astley (died Kawhia 1846) absconded from Sydney and married Te Rangiata, child Annie Laurie, Williams, etc etc.
