Completed Yorkshire (East Riding & York) Requests / Re: Very recent death
« on: Monday 01 November 10 08:54 GMT (UK)  »
Hello all

Sorry that I haven't got back recently but my computer went all squiffy. My husband has fixed now, I hope!

Good news has come to light though. The relative has been found alive although alas not well. He had been moved to a care home but has been in hospital for a while. I have been able to get in touch with him which was really nice.

I tried all that was suggested and obviously didn't find him. Eventually I found a phone number of someone living nearby who remembered enough details to put me in the right direction. It is quite surprising just how difficult it can be to find a Hull phone number, both past and present! Hull Telephones/KC Comms don't seem to publish the info quite as readily online unlike BT.

Thanks again

Sue

Hi

I have been led to believe that an estranged relative has probably died within the last two years. Obviously I am not going to find them in the online BMD's for a while. Is there a way I could find out if he has actually passed away? I have had a look in the local paper for an obituary but with no luck. He has also been removed fron the telephone directory.

Any ideas?

Thanks

Sue

In which case that would appear to fit nicely.

Thanks very much to you both

Yorkshire (West Riding) / St Nicholas Church, Thorne burial

Hi

I know a family member was buried at St Nicholas Church in Thorne on 27 JAN 1876. My husband visited the churchyard last year and was unable to find a headstone. We realise this is not unusual but it is quite possible he was fairly wealthy and so may have had one. There are several overgrown graves which may have been him but that would take a lot of work to clear them to try and read.

Could I ask where any grave registers and burial plans for this church would be held?

Thanks

Thanks,

That was what I was thinking as well but I don't know if that was still the case by 1900 :P

Hi

I'm investigating a court case from 1900 and would like to know what the case was about.

He appeared in the local Magistrate Court and he asked for an extension to pay the "poor rate". He was granted another week to pay. Seven days later he appeared again and was still unable to pay. It appears he was sent to prison as he is in the 1901 Census in Hull Prison.

It's a long time since I did history at school but I seem to remember the poor rate was to do with the early 1800's and the Poor Law. Does anyone know what this poor rate would be and why he would get a prison sentence? The court case was in September 1900 in Beverley, East Yorkshire.

Thanks for any help.

Pencils, passport and driving licence at the ready!

Guy, thanks for that, I've checked with the IGI the other day and the bits I need are not complete, they've got some but not all. It also gets me away from the ironing so there's always a silver lining even if I don't get anywhere. ;D
