Banffshire / Re: Gordon Kirkmichael Tomintoul
« on: Tuesday 10 May 11 10:47 BST (UK)  »
Hello,
Re Charles Gordon;
I came to a standstill re my ancestors from Tomintoul; I was looking for a John Gordon and Jean Cummin- these names were wrong and their names are now Peter Gordon and Jane Cumming; relatives who never met grandparents assume everyone was called John and their accent affected spelling.

One of Peter Gordon's sons was a Charles; and I have found info on a site dedicated to Grants and Gordons of Kirkmichael (also Cameron) the spelling of the farms they lived on kept changing, it was called Fordmouth but has been recorded as Fuiedmuth, also Gaullrigg where my Grant family lived has been recorded as Gawlairg and other variations.

I have found another Charles Gordon born at Fordmouth, in 1766, probably a brother of my ancestor Peter.
I was told about these Gordons coming over from Aberdeenshire with General Gordon of Glenbucket by someone in the Tourist info office.
ARE ANY OF MY gORDON ANCESTORS CONNECTED TO YOURS?  i THINK ALL THE MEN NAMED cHARLES WERE NAMED AFTER bONNIE pRINCE cHARLIE.

Hello
I saw your query re Maggie Grant at Fordmouth.
My ancestors Peter/John and Jean Gordon ms Cummin/g lived there in the early 1800's; their 2 sons took over the farm, John and Charles.  John married a Margaret Ness/ or Innes, who was much younger than him.

John had a sister, Jean, who married John Grant from Inveravon, the two of them lived at Fordmouth then Gaulrig before leaving to live for the rest of their lives in Craig, Montrose.

I can only presume that the Grants who moved in later on were related to this John Grant?  John's mother was Isabel Burgis/ Isabella Burgess, his father was John Grant, I could not find any brothers or sisters listed.

I don't know if you have seen the farm? It is in a very beautiful setting.  Unfortunately the farmer living there declined to answer my letter to him, I just wanted to know if the house was the original one.

Hello again,
David Christie, son of David and Mary; died aged 21 in a farming accident.  He didn't marry.

Re my post yesterday;
Catherine, Alexander and Andrew were the 'extra children' of David and Mary Christie.
I was wrong re the names of wives; Alexander married Sarah Hill, Andrew married Catherine Hardie.
On Alexander's death cert, the witness for the family is his 'brother in law' Kenward Kinnear;  I'm blowed as to how he is the brother in law of any of the brothers and sisters, he must be related in some other way.
On a census, staying with David and Mary is a grandchild called Jean Ricard, and who the parents are, I have yet to find out.  They were living in Cairnton at the time, by Stracathro.
Are you related to any of my Grant and Gordon relatives from Tomintoul? I keep hoping someone will appear who can sift through the umpteen Grants and Gordons living there; I can only go back again, to the late 1700's.

PS Where have you seen the spelling 'Kemlay' for Kemlo;?  I haven't seen that spelling anywhere; just the one time her name was spelt 'Kemloe'.

Hello,
I'm Alison who put the post on re William Christie and Jean Kemlo,
are you related too?   A person related through Robertson and a man related through William, son of David and Mary got in touch with me.  I was able to give him David's death cert details.
There are three other children too, one, Catherine, apparently had a birth cert, but it has not been recorded on the microfische, she married Alexander Moug and had about 7 children; also two other brothers Alexander and Andrew.  Alexander unfortunately died a pauper in Sunnyside, Lunatic Asylum as they so nicely put it in those days.  He had a brain disease and died aged about 47,  Alexander worked as a carter in North Moor, county Durham and seems to have married a woman called Sarah Hardie (bit hard to make the name out) I don't know if he had family down in Durham or not.  Andrew married and died in Kirriemuir in his 70's.  I'm sorry I don't have my notes with me.
Someone suggested that Jean Kemlo may have been the daughter of Adam Kemlo and Margaret Lyon but that they thought that their daughter Jean had died.  There was a Kemlo User group going until approx 3 years ago when the person running it died.  I found a David Christie who called his son James Cobb Christie and tracked down his father, Francis.  I thought that he might have been a brother to William; , Francis's father was Thomas Christie, (no wife's name); however, Thomas may have been a brother to William and there is a Thomas who might fit in with being the father of William Christie.  I took lots of photos around Benholm and a few of Inverbervie, but there are few farm cottage buildings dated from that time.
I don't know if you have any more info yourself?  Thanks for getting in touch., Cheers, Alison

Thank you very much Jean, though I hate to think of my GGGrand parents being buried deep down in someone's garden!

Thank you very much Jean,
I think Eliza and Joseph are distant relatives, I have a Joseph Christie born 1822 a month after his parent's marriage!  but he was married to Jane Falconer; however, the name Joseph seems to be related to the Kemlo side of the family who gave many children Biblical names.
I saw Robert's name in the horse tax list but again he is either a cousin of William, or just shared the same surname.

My Christie relatives started off in Bervie then moved to Benholm, I just have the last child being born in 1803.  It is very frustrating as I have been in contact with 2 other people doing the same tree and we cannot get any further back.
Thank you for your work anyway.

Do you know where poor people were buried? Loads of people lived in Johnshaven and Benholm but the Churchyard is relatively small.

Jean,
Have you any results for the names Christie/Kemlo in Benholm Churchyard? Do you know where the poor would have been buried?
