Hi all,

Just to let you know the progress...

So far using certificates I have managed to follow Peter Duncan's paternal & maternal parents etc.

The scary thing is that names in their tree intermingle with ones in mine...!

Wondering if this is why I always had an interest in this Registrar!

I have found that Peter's son Arthur Stuart Duncan born 25.03.1881 left for America, arriving in 1920 into New York from Southampton. I haven't been able to follow him yet as my world subscription in Ancestry hasn't been renewed yet, so I'm not sure what happened with him. Seems a bit sad that Peter and his wife were in their 40's when they had him,  he appears to be an only child and then he emigrates!

Thanks so much EV.

I downloaded his marriage & death certs so I know all of the census return's found were correct.

I'll go and have a play on IGI now!

And I see using google maps that when the Duncan family resided in Mill Street at the time of the 1891 census that my relatives lives literally just around the corner.

Makes you wonder how big a place was Montrose in 1891, would he have been likely to know the families around him, especially when the family came in year after year to register a birth and often a death a short time later...

Using the information that Carole kindly found, I have found what may be the best fitting death in 1914 in Montrose.  :)

I'll order the certificate and establish that it is the same person!

Thank you so much Carole for looking at this for me!

OOOH a 6 year old wife! Goodness, I am hoping it's just a transcribing error!

That's a wonderful start and now I can go and trawl Scotlands People and try to see what else I can find!

Hi everyone,

Throughout the years of tracing my family in Montrose, I have noticed that an awful lot of birth, marriages and death were registered by the one person, Peter Duncan, Registrar for the District of Montrose over at least the period 1880-1900 (and most likely earlier and later). Now he must have witnessed an awful lot of events and social changes in the area, and it has prompted my interest in him as an individual.

I would like to know more about this person and was wondering if anyone would have any access to him. My access to a worldwide paid site has just lapsed and I was wondering if you can perform a census search on him with the keyword of Registrar.

Unfortunately I know nothing about him as yet, date of birth etc,   :(I am awaiting some assistance from the Montrose Library, but any help that I received, i'd be most appreciative of...I know I am asking a big challenge! Actually that's not quite true, I can confirm he is one of the registrars that had beautiful easy to read handwriting all these years later!  :)

I don't even know if Registrars moved around from District to District or if they remained in the one area.  ??? ???

Hi,

Oh I had not realised that they were the same place...as Mt Road seems to be very flat!

Hi Karen,

Yep - Crancel means Council house
Braes - means hill

so council house on the hill!

No doubt it will have been renamed by now though....or redeveloped

Hi Karen,

No doubt they all knew each other then! people seemed to all know their neighbours back then.

I checked the copies of my census returns but my images don't show your family unfortunately.

Cheers
