Lancashire / Re: James and George Litt..Liverpool 1840s
« on: Tuesday 06 January 15 22:30 GMT (UK)  »
Hi

As others suggest, it looks like George Litt followed the well trodden path of many a Liverpool lad and headed to sea as part of the merchant navy.

First records suggest he initially went to sea in 1845, aged 15. He was an apprentice but only lasted for a year before his ticket was cancelled. Does seem that he went back to sea later however as he shows up again with his ticket reissued for voyages between 1853 - 1854. The records can be accessed via FindMyPast.

Lancashire / Re: Issac Clampitt..Bigamist?

Hi everyone

As Galium identifies, Ann Holt is named as a Bondsman along with Isaac Clampitt. Both would be jointly responsible for paying the £500 should he choose to skip town without going through with the marriage to Mary Parr or, if it later turned out he was not actually free to marry....... This obligation would also be transferred down to the heirs of named parties so it was a big obligation.

£500 was a lot of money in 1799 but, as Isaac was a sailor from Bovey Tracey, Devon who had arrived in Parkgate and 'fallen in love' - I am guessing that Mary Parr's family may have felt he was quite a flight risk - or that he may not have a whiter than white history!  As it happens, he stayed in Parkgate happily married for the rest of his life, raised a big family and died at the age of 90. Isaac and Mary are my 4xGGrandparents.

Snipo - great to learn we have a family connection and if you want to PM me then I would certainly be happy to share what information i have with you if it I have anthing that may help.

The Common Room / Re: How awkward can you be!

Hi

I also had a Nancy/Ann dilemma that drove me batty for months.

At least yours is consistent.  With mine some of the children are bapised with a mother's name of Nancy and some with a mother called Ann. William marries a Nancy but most of the census records show him with Ann. It really was most confusing and I was convinced for a while that William was leading a double life with two families........ By the end however, the evidence was stacking up so much that it became clear that Nancy/Ann were the same person with Nancy as her 'proper' name but likely preferring to be called Ann.

Quite why the same vicar in their own parish church would use the two interchangably I have yet to figure out. Rather think they were not overly regular church goers!

United States of America / Re: Looking for Lillie

Thanks

I think I agree that the Lillie that marries in 1913 is probably not mine based on the evidence you suggest.

It would be good to be able to find at least one of them on the 1920 census but I am finding it difficult to locate any likely suspects in 1920.  Do you know if there are big gaps in the US census for 1920?  I know there are a few gaps in the English census' but have little knowledge about US records?
I feel like, either she marries before 1920 - in which case the person we have just eliminated above is the only really clear suspect, she dies, in which case I can't find any likely evidence of this, or she is there somewhere and I just can't find her!!!!
Oh well - guess I will keep looking.
Thanks again

Thanks Shellyesq

Lillie Nachimowitz married in 1913 and looks like she could be a strong possibility.  I will try to follow this one up and see what I can find out.

Thanks again

Hi
Her surname is Nachomowitz, although sometimes the family name is written as Nachomovitz.  Later on it was reduced by a number of members to Nachman.

My Great Grandfather and one of his brothers however went by the name of Heller(!)  They were certainly all siblings however and the different names seems to not be too untypical of Jewish families who left Eastern Eupore at the time.

Thanks for looking Genealiza

United States of America / Looking for Lillie

I am trying to find more information about Lillie NACHOMOWITZ

In the US Census of 1910, Lillie is living at Ridge St, Manhattan Ward 13 in New York with her sister Dora WEINBERG and family.

Dora and Lillie are the sisters of my GGrandfather and the family are all born in Russia.  Morris (My GGrandfather) never got further than Liverpool but Lillie arrived in America in 1905 and Dora arrived later, in 1906. I have found a fair bit of information about Dora. I have a record of her arrival in the USA on the SS Haverford and know that she died in 1913.  Her husband Nathan remarried shortly after to Rose.

However, other than the 1910 census record, I have found no information whatsoever about Lillie. I can't find anything about her arrival in America or what happens to her after 1910. I am guessing that she also travelled via England (Hull to Liverpool transmigration path) as this is what the rest of the family did - but maybe this is a flawed assumption and where I am going wrong?  I would be grateful for others to have a look and see if they can come up with anything I am missing......

Many thanks in anticipation

Lancashire Lookup Requests / Re: St Bede's Brindle - Bennison

Paslwigr

Thank you so much for looking this up for me.  This is certainly the right family and you have managed to find a few extra siblings for my GGgrandfather, John Richard Bennison, that I knew nothing about before as they sadly never got to figure on a census.

Most importantly however, you have managed to answer a riddle that I had not even realised was bothering me.  Your identification of the death of Jane, aged 51 in 1869, was a real shock.  I thought I had tracked Richard down living with his wife Jane for at least 20 years following this!  On going back to look closely at the records to make sense of what you found - I realised my error.
Jane clearly had died between the 1861 and 1871 census.  Trouble was that Richard had almost seamlessly married another Jane - and I simply had not realised.
It now makes sense and is quite obvious when I look back.  The ages are different etc - only I never noticed it before - just assumed it was an error or a bit of vanity suddenly at work.....

Anyhow - many many thanks for helping me out before I went any further down a wrong track.

Thanks a million to everyone who has helped with this query.
