Hi,
Thanks for the reply. I knew that a branch of the family moved to the USA but I had few details. I now have a reasonably complete story of Edward Hugh Gaten, his brothers and sisters, parents and grandparents, and most of their descendents in England. There is too much to put in a post here but I would be happy to forward all of this to you by PM.
Best wishes,
Edward Gaten (undoubtedly named after MY great-grandfather)

Hi Schoch,

Thanks for that - I had missed Mary's sister altogether. I'm not sure who the Mary in the last link was as the date of birth is a bit early; perhaps mother-in-law.

Cheers, egaten

My grandmother, Julia Agnes McKenzie (1877-1962) was born in the Channel Islands (St Helier). I have been unable to find out the fate of the rest of her family. In 1891 census, Julia and her sister Isabella are listed as residents of the Jersey Childrens Home. In 1891, they are with their widowed mother Mary in Ordinance Yard, St Helier. I have reason to believe that her father's name was Roderick.

I am able to follow Julia throughout her life, but does anyone know what happened to Roderick, Mary or Isabella?

Thanks, egaten

I've also been looking for Gatens/Gattens ancestors. My information is that Philip Gatens and his son Hugh lived at Limavady, Derry in 1831. Limavady is only about 10 miles as the crow flies from Moville so there is a good chance they are related. Hugh emigrated to London in the 1830s and I have now traced all of my branch of the family that are descended from him. If you find any more about the Gatens from Ulster I would love to hear about them.

Cheers, egaten

Hi Liz,

I have also been looking at the Downings from Bedfordshire. I would be very interested in finding out what happened to George and Susan after they reach New Zealand. Could you let me know how they thrived over there? In return I would be happy to bring you up to date on our side of the Downing family.

thanks,

Ted

Hi JJ,

Thanks for that. The baptisms of William, Samuel and Joseph seem right, as do the burial records so I'm sure Joseph Laband is the one I'm looking for.

As Mary was born in 1811 according to the census, the marriage can't be the right one.

Also the birth of Mary Ann in 1815 is too early. The census records two children (presumably twins) Thomas and Anne, born in 1826.

Any idea what happened to those two?

Thanks again, EG
