Australia / Re: JOHNS FAMILY

Hello, Michelle. Thank you for your post. Although I have seen Thomas Johns' grave in the St Luke's Anglican Church cemetery, Campbelltown, and there is indication there was a distinct rift in his family, getting to the nub of him was/is very difficult, with records of import non existent, it would seem. Jumping ship was not an unknown practice, and I suppose this isolated little island was ideal for such a feat. I feel sure I have heard about a tenuous Russian connection, beit a freighter - or by imaginings of aristocratic connections (folk lore, I'm guessing). Rose

Hi James,

That's okay re the Gaunt RN years. Someone may find my posts that are dotted about and have some information for me - eventually! LOL...

For these many decades I have known the house only as Franklin House, but that doesn't mean it didn't have another name when it began it's life when the Hawkes' took it over from Britton Jones, a local brewer.

I did read more on Franklin House after my last, early morning, post and the following link tells of the Greer's, who in 1888 "bought the property and called it The Hollies". If I find out more of previous names of the house, I'll let you know...

You may have already found this Google listing, a pdf: 22 – Around Longford

From 1842 the house was a select boys' school run by William Keeler. Hawkes and his wife since c1833 Martha Hawkes (née Green, 1808–1886) who had just  ...

Back again, Ohanlon,

Of course I realise with hindsight that the Gaunt RN connection couldn't be directly to/with John Hawkes, could it, as he came into the picture far later than Mathias Gaunt's time in the RN. Hopefully someone will see the posts and clarify a Gaunt connection to a fellow mariner and the reason why VDL was the chosen location to bring the family. Will have to do more digging... Rose

Hello Ohanlon,

I think it's pretty safe to say Isaac and Frances Green did not come to VDL.

However, their daughter Frances, nee Green, married Mathias Gaunt in 1825 and they and the first four of their children ventured forth from London on the Eliza, arriving in Hobart Town in 1831 (you can verify this via Trove).

I have just begun to look at William Keeler Hawkes, in an effort to connect Mathias Gaunt to someone else also with a RN background - John Hawkes may well be a connection. I would be grateful for any information here.

Mathias Gaunt was a surgeon, who practiced in London for a time, but he came to VDL (Tasmania, formerly Van Diemen's Land) with the direct intention of taking up farming, which he did, at a substantial property he developed and named Windermere, on the banks of the Tamar, not far from Launceston.

William Keeler Hawkes married Frances Gaunt's sister Martha, in England.

In VDL, the Hawkes renamed and converted their property to Franklin House, at Franklin Village (nowadays Youngtown), to a school. Some of the Gaunt boys attended this school.

William Keeler Hawkes also took up land at Windermere, he as well had a small number of premises in and around Launceston.

I have had great difficulty finding lists or notes confirming Mathias (his spelling) Gaunt's time as a trainee surgeon and where he served in the RN. Any help here would be gratefully received...

Hope this helps... Cheers... Rose

Had a good run since my last post. Pleased to find Richard went on to have a large family after the loss of his first, including another son Richard in the line. So now I have Maria, Hannah, Elizabeth, Martha, Joshua, Ellen, Jane and Ann (not necessarily in this order)... Time to close... Until next time... Rose

Oh, and I find it's Kexbrough...

So many notes in front of me, Carolanne. Had 2 dates for an Elizabeth but due to your prompt realise the one I need would have only been 21 when she married, so I'll now scrap the question re any other marriage. ::)

Have looked up Maria, bapt. 1809, daughter of Richard Jackson of Rexbro? Keabro? Farmer. Wish the mother's name was there too...

Hannah was baptised in 1810, and there's another Richard, this time born to Richard and Elizabeth, in 1828.

Thanks for the Maria... Rose

Cheers for that info, dobfarm. I'll follow your lead. And, yes, I'm an Ancestry.com subscriber, so I can follow up on what you've suggested...

Wondering now about second wife, Elizabeth, who married Richard Jackson in 1808 (Penistone, St John the Baptist). Know they had one child, Hannah, wondered if they had any more children...

Elizabeth would have been 28 years old in 1808. Could she have been married before too?

Appreciate everyone's assistance... Thank you... Rose

Thank you, 'warncoort' and 'carolanne'. I had discovered an Ellen Ellis connected to Richard Jackson yesterday, and their baby son Richard, who died not long after his birth, but pleased to have your confirmation.

I am also pleased to have Ellen Jackson's burial date, as that and would have been my next quest.

Again, many thanks for the post... Cheers... Rose
