Yorkshire (East Riding & York) Lookup Requests / Re: Greenfield/ Slack
« on: Sunday 30 December 12 01:12 GMT (UK)  »
Thanks, Ankerpep_52.  Well to answer your question (quite tardily), Mary Ann Ferguson married Thomas Alex. Wilson.  They had a daughter, Mary Ann Wilson who married m. Wm. Greenfiled son of Wm. Greenfield and Anne Slack.  The Mary Anne I want to know about apparently died after 1871 in Canada and the burial site is now a ball-field and the church records have been lost. I am trying to find out about her.  Thanks, Tom

Thank you Ankerpep_52

Yes, Mary Ann Butters Greenfield married John Butters before 1872.  Her brother (William Greenfield) was my G-Grandfather.  Her brother Thomas married Martha Sutherland 29 Jan 1884 at St. Mary's.  There is another Mary Ann (Ferguson) Wilson whom I can't track down, whose daughter married William, and who was probably buried in the same area.  Thanks again.

Fantastic.  Thank you Keyboard86.  I had dates but not places, besides Doncaster.  Now I can probably track down the right William.  My grandmother was Ada Greenfield and would be the grand daughter of this William.  Apparently the 1851 census was taken before the eldest Thomas Stanley Greenfield was born.  The family moved to Canada a few years afterward where my G-Grandfather William (III?) was born.  Thanks again! - Tom

Thank you for the info, Finbar. Was there any information on the parents of the groom, or is that something that was not necessarily recorded?  Thanks again, Tom

I hope this is the right board.  I am looking for a marriage or other information about a William Greenfield (born about 1826 in Yorkshire) and an Ann Slack (born about 1828).  They had a child in Doncaster (Thomas Stanley Greenfield) in 1851 and another one Mary Ann in 1853.  I have located an Ann Slack from Doncaster, but several possible Williams from the area (specifically Ayrmin, Hook and Thorne).  I am hoping to find a marriage record that will give me more information about this couple.  They immigrated to Canada about 1855 (St. Marys, Perth, Ontario).  Thank You- Tom

Monica and Ev.  Happy ending to my search. I found a snippet from a book Scottish American Heirs that lists Thomas Alexander Wilson of Canada as heir to Laurence Wilson of Dunfermline.  This confirms to m that we have the right family. A search of Laurence Wilson online (e.g. Annals of Dunfermline) brings up a lot of information about his Mill at Dunfermline, his court case against William Beveridge and his collection and sale/donation of many Jacobite items before he left for Canada.  This makes sense since the family oral history said that the Wilson's owned a flax mill in Dunfermline, and that one of the items we have in our family (a large bowl) was used by the Bonnie Prince, and a small portrait we have is of a person (perhaps an ancestor) who supported the Jacobites.  This family had some means since my mother says her grandma (Thomas's daughter) had a number of very nice furnishings that came over from Scotland.  Thomas himself really knew little about farming and it was quite an adjustment to go from a well off life in Scotland to working the land in Canada and northern Michigan.  I will still search for where he and Mary married and Mary's family (supposedly from Dunblaine), but I want to thank you for your help in this search.  - Tom

Monica- You are awesome!  Thank you for the info.  I am pretty sure that the Thomas you found is the one.  Just will look for some more confirmation.  Laurence (Sr.) must have moved to Middlesex, Ontario along with Janet.  There is an extensive article about the court case I found on-line that may give more clues about this family.  Thanks again! - Tom

BTW Ev, the Mary Wilson Greenfield you mentioned is my G Grandmother and the Thomas Wilson who was single is the person I am named after, "Uncle Toot".  Since Janet was born in Canada, I get the feeling that Thomas and Mary met in Canada around 1851, though it is possible that they married in Scotland.  Thanks again.

Thank you very much Monica and Ev.  I had found info on the Laurence Wilson suggested.  According to the chat about the Mid-Mill at Pitliver from this site, he was involved in a court case against a William Beveridge, lost and left for America in 1855.  This would explain why my Thomas so suddenly left University in Scotland and came to Canada.  Family tradition holds that they were a family of some means, and the items we inherited from them: a bowl and an amulet,  are very nice.  There is another Thomas Wilson of the same age that is the son of a Thomas Wilson who was the minister at the Crossgates Church at this time.  This Thomas was listed as a writers apprentice who lived at the Crossgates Manse in Dunfermline.  This would fit the profile of someone who went to study in the ministry.  I am not sure which one my Thomas is.  Monica, the Laurence you mention dying in Harrisville, MI was "Uncle Lowrey" whom I have a picture of, and was the son of my Thomas Wilson.  He also had a sister Janet.  My next step would be to find some info (perhaps a marriage certificate) that links my Thomas to either Laurence or the minister Thomas.  Thanks again!
