My friends father died in 1976 & it was a "men only" funeral. There didn't seem to be any particular reason as he wasn't a member of any society etc.
I remember finding it rather odd that his widow & only child stayed at home with other female relatives

Death Dec qtr 1970 Hartlepool 1A 2600 aged 87. Born 15.5.1883 - a day different in 1939.

He is on the 1939 register & his occupation suggests he remained in the police force after 1911. He is living in West Hartlepool in 1939 but sorry - I can't help with info re whereabouts of any employment records for him
