World War One / Re: Can anyone help me find this soldier?

As you have his service number, have you checked the MRI index to get his full name?
Hi Carole, Thank you. I only subscribe to Ancestry and the only W. Briggs that I can find is called Waldo and he has a different service number. As this is a one off search, I don't want to be subscribing to other sites. I'm not conversant with the MRI Index and Google isn't helping me find it, a search for MRI just brings up the medical scan! Any help would be most appreciated!

I have a beautiful RFA silk postcard which I would love to get back to the descendants of Cpl W. Briggs. Sadly I can't find out about him. Can anyone help me please?

All I could find was a hand written record for his birth 1/7/1898. Father Johannes and Mother Olga. Of course it was in German, so I don't know exactly what it said. It was dated 4/7/1898 in Berlin. I did however also find a family tree online, which I guess might be yours, but if not it has a photograph of their daughter Margaret on it. She died in Stoke Talmage, Oxford in 1992.
Regards.

Thank you Paco. I have that document, and have built quite a long tree. Margaret(he) was my mother. She was my father's translator when he was stationed at Celle with the BFO. They married in 1947. He was one of the first British officers to marry an "enemy alien" following WW2!

The Common Room / Re: Any ideas where my ancestor's picture was published?

A probable shot in the dark, but have you had a look at the book mentioned in the bibliography here https://www.britishmuseum.org/collection/term/BIOG80040? (John Culme, 'The Directory of Gold & Silversmiths 1838-1914', Woodbridge 1987)
Thank you for the suggestion, but no luck there unfortunately.

The Common Room / Any ideas where my ancestor's picture was published?

Years ago I was sent poor quality line engraved picture of my ancestor John James Thornhill 1764-1857. He was a Cutler and traded from 144 New Bond Street, London.
I have been trying to find out what publication it appeared in ever since in the hope that I can obtain a copy in context.
Any help or ideas where to look would be most welcome, or maybe someone can succeed where I have failed!
The business was taken over by his son Walter when he retired, and was a supplier of chatelaines and other goods to Queen Victoria.

Europe / Seeking information about Ernst Albert Herrmann Panzer
« on: Thursday 15 February 24 13:07 GMT (UK)  »
I am seeking any further information about my Grandfather Ernst Albert Herrmann Panzer b.1.Jul.1898   d.15 Jul 1964.   He was a High Court Appeal Judge. He married Wilhelma Johanna Lina Hjort on 15 Jul 1924 in Kiel. I have been told that he spent part of WW2 in a hard labour camp for refusing to support "the Party". Places he may have lived include Berlin, Kiel, Hannover and Celle. I have no idea where he practiced, nor do I have any documented evidence of his incarceration in a labour camp.
I feel certain that he must be mentioned somewhere in the German archives, perhaps an obituary or judiciary records. (I do have all the family members and dates).
Any help or pointers would be most welcome.

I have struggled to find any reference to either the pubs or family licensed victuallers (publicans) in any paper within the BNL which is now hosted by Find My Past. I have searched both national and local papers. Part of the problem I suspect is the dreadful OCR from old papers and scans, many of which were done when the technology was in its infancy. One day one hopes that they will be redone.

Thank you for your help everyone.
I have managed to track down three locations for three different relatives all of whom had pubs.
One of the best resources that I have found is https://pubshistory.com/ which gave me loads of information and put me in contact with Kevan who is collating lots of searchable information on the subject.
