Dear Hugh,
Thank you so much for taking the time to reply and I would certainly be interested in any information concerning the Moores and my mother's early life.
You have just caught me in a very busy week, trying to tidy up several business things before a 10 day ski trip, but I will certainly write at length on my return and will send several photographs of my mother.
Please bear with me and I hope to get back to you by the end of this month.
With regards, Tony Hamerton.

Thank you all.  I am afraid I am very new to this genealogy stuff but finding it fascinating. However I am beginning to believe that we may not be related to the Hamertons of Clonmell.
It is more likely that they were linked to the Hamertons from Hellifield Peel in Yorkshire.
My grandmother spent a great deal of time trying to link our family to the Hellifield lot but I can't find any evidence.  However a question remains. If no connection then where did the attached family tree come from and how did it come into my grandmother's possesion? The attached tree covers a period from 1170 until John Hamerton Crump in 1853.
I do have lots of evidence linking Hamertons in Londonderry, particularly the Rev Thomas Johnson Hamerton being my great grandfather.
Obviously census records are an easy source but where do you start to find links to family before census records began. I think the Rev TJH's father was William who married Mary Ann Johnson and his father was a Robert Hamerton who married a Mary Mountgarrett, subject of another enquiry I placed earlier about Mountgarretts, a middle name I carry now.
As a general question. Is it likely that at some point it all links back through cousins etc or are there likely to be completely separate family ancestors.
Sorry to be so naive about all this. Thanks again, Tony H.

Hi Sancti, Jessie died in 1951 or 52 in Edinburgh.  I am interested in following that side of the family up although they are not blood relatives.  There may be a surviving neice or nephew of Jessie who may know something of the history and reasons my mother was adopted. Thank you for your interest.

CaroleW, that's amazing - thank you.  That is most likely the correct Jessie as we have a silver salver at home presented to Richard Durtnell and I had always thought it came from my mother's side.  I will persevere in the hope of finding someone in that family who may know the background. Thank you again.

Hi CaroleW,
The marriage in 1919 is not correct as the spouse's name is wrong. Alexander George Moore married an English lady called Jessie someone.  Have yet to find her maiden name.  As a beginner to this I am staggered at how many people have matching details.  There are about five Alexander George Moore who seem to have married a Jessie. She was about 18 years his junior.
Lavender Joan was born 17th June 1919.
I will certainly look into the Lavenders you found.  Many thanks.

Thanks Imba, it was not just a typo. They were on the Queen Mary and it was Nov 1936 not 34.

Thank you both. Certainly the right person and, being new to this, hadn't realised the last three people in the 1901 census would be servants. That makes sense.
I have them travelling on Queen Mary to New York with my mother as a 17 year old in 1936 but my real interest is whether it is possible to find any records of adoption in Scotland. I am led to believe that it was not a requirement to register adoption in 1917.
If I can find any surviving members of the Moore family they may have knowledge of how my mother came to be adopted by Alexander and Jessie Moore. Thanks again.
