In the mid 19th century John Reilly prospered in business in the town of Belmullet and began to acquire lands. He bought land that had formerly been in the possession of the Houston and Nash families and in 1868 he leased more than 1000 acres from Reverend Sir William Palmer in the barony of Erris, county Mayo. In 1876 Thomas F.O'Reilly of Carne House, Belmullet, owned 6472 acres in county Mayo. By March 1916 he had accepted an offer from the Congested Districts' Board for the purchase of his estate and Noone writes of the sale of the estate in 1920 to the Board.

Think I saw this in my searches but dismissed it thinking that my Reilly's weren't rich to own so much land being small farmers/shop owners.

Apologies.
It is that previous thread that is wrong, I think.

Your Kate is a Reilly from Belmullet. Thank goodness  :)

;D ;D Kate Reilly who is a Catherine born 1882 Belmullet is the daughter of Patrick Henry Reilly
The children of Patrick Henry are from Belmullet but not sure where his father Henry was born?

I haven't delved too much into my grandmother Kate/Catherine- the Reillys first - but she married a policeman, George Mckeon in 1908, when he was posted to Belmullet.  They later had a small holding in Mountmelmick (sorry for spelling) where Kate would give their food and bake cakes for the poor people - much to George's annoyance. So it was nice to tell the cousin who told me that story about Kate's father and grandfather being connected to the Board of Guardians and that it was in her genes to help :D

Oh Wow Hallmark, where did you find that?

The workhouse was built in 1848 so looks like the Guardians were active before?

I wonder if that was Henry Reilly, Patrick Henry's Dad as mentioned in the 1864 newspaper.
I deduced from the newspaper article that Thomas J Reilly was his brother so maybe he was one of the 3 Reilly's mentioned in your article? Either way the Reilly's were quite involved - interesting?
