Thank you for the help osprey.  The Calstock connection seems more plausible than the John and Elinor as parents tree that's been copied by others.  I'm inclined to favour the location rather than an exact date match.   Hard to be certain i suppose.

I'm trying to work out who John Hitchins parents were.  I think he was born circa 1765.

This is what i have so far..

12 Jan 1797 Marriage St. Germans John Hitchens occ. husbandman residing Calstock Anna Clark widow (9 Jan 1793 Anna Johns Marriage to William Clark at St.Germans)

1797 Maria Hitchens bapt 21 Nov 1797 St.Germans dau of John and Anna

1798 Land Tax Redemption. res.Germon. Proprietor - Duke of Leeds. Occupier - Jno Hitchen

1800 Ann Hitchens bapt 2 Mar 1800 St.Germans dau of John and Anna

1802 Jane Hitchens bapt 8 Jun 1802 St.Germans dau of John and Anne

1805 John Hitchens bapt Morval 11 Jun 1805 res.St.Germans f.John mo.Ann

1806 William Hitchins bapt. 5 Nov 1807 South Hill child of John & Hannah

1809 Henry Hitchins bapt 1 Dec 1809 South Hill son of John and Ann

1837 Voter's List - John Hitchens farm as occupier Trewasick

John Hitchins died 19 Feb 1840 South Hill aged 74 years old.

HITCHENS, JOHN        74

buried 22 February 1840 St Sampson Churchyard

This stone erected in memory of John Hitchins late of Trewassick in this parish Yeoman who died February 19th 1840 aged 74 years

possible baptisms?
13 Jan 1765 Sithney John Hitchins  f. John Hitchins mo. Elener
20 Jan 1765 Moretonhampstead John Hutchings  f.Ambros
8 Sep 1765 Falmouth John Hitchens  f.John Hitchens mo.Catherine
20 Jul 1766 Marhamchurch John Hutchings  f.Robert Hutchings mo.Elizabeth
22 May 1768 Egloskerry  John Hutchins f.Paschaer mo.Anne
30 Jul 1768 Gwennap John Hitchins f.John mo.Eliz

Several ancestry trees seem to have John Hitchens and Elinor Angle of Colerne (m.1745 Wiltshire) as the parents of John Hitchens.
Quite a few folk with totally different John Hitchens seem to have claimed the 1840 burial for their John. One has a John Hutchings m.1797 Parthenia Williams at Calstock with 7 children all born Calstock.

Hi wivenhoe, thanks for the reply.  Yes, that's the family on the census.

I think John Etherton and Cathrine Standing are William's parents.
Their other children are :-
John Etherton (1787–1867) m.1810 Anne Humphrey
Jane Etherton (1789–?)
Edmund Etherton (1791–?)
Mary Etherton (1794–1798)
Hugh Etherton (1796–1886) m.1825 Sarah Cumber m.1849 Ann Ireland
Harriet Etherton (1798–?)
Elizabeth Etherton (1800–1874)
Edward Etherton (1804–1888) m.1827 Phillis Funnell

So maybe Elizabeth was married to Edmund? unless one of the other brothers married another time.

Is Harry actually Elizabeth's son and not William and Mary's?

Thanks for the reply Daisy.  I did think that was the right Mary Boxall baptism at first because it was the only Lodsworth one.

FreeReg website has this Mary 1809 baptism at St Peter Church. The only Mary Boxall baptised at Lodsworth around this time.  Found the image of the Parish Register on familysearch - 1809 Boxall Mary, Daughter of William & Ann baptized July 30.

So right place but only the 1809 baptism date, so I guess she could have been born earlier say early 1804, unless the age recorded at death is wrong.

Cross checking with her age on the census - 45 on the 30 Mar 1851 and 54 on the 7 Apr 1861

The Mary born 4 Mar 1805 and baptised at Tillington would actually be 46 and 56 on those census and 60 on the death record not 61.  Same goes for the an earlier Tillington  Dec 1804 baptism.

Trying to work lines back from William Etherton and Mary Boxall and would appreciate any help and or thoughts. This is what i have found so far:-

15 May 1827  Storrington
William Etherton of this parish bachelor and Mary Boxale of the same parish spinster were married in this church by banns. 3 witnesses Horace Burstow, Elizabeth Etherton, Thomas Battersley

On the 1851 and 1861 census William Etherton's birthplace is Storrington and Mary's birthplace is Lodsworth. William was a Blacksmith.

Mary Etherton (Boxall) died 21st March 1865 aged 61 years at Tower Street, Chichester informant Eliza Allen of Lennox Place, Chichester.
(ETHERTON, MARY 61 GRO Reference: 1865 M Quarter in CHICHESTER Volume 02B Page 265)

William Etherton died 13th March 1880 aged 79 years at Workhouse, Chichester informant William C. Dewey master workhouse chichester
ETHERTON, WILLIAM 79 GRO Reference: 1880 M Quarter in CHICHESTER Volume 02B Page 262

An Ancestry hint is suggesting Mary Boxall's birth date of 4th March 1805 and baptism of 24th March 1805 at Tillington, parents John Boxall and Jane, which would fit in with Mary's age at death. I checked a map for the distance and Lodsworth and Tillington are 2 or 3 miles apart. Also there is a marriage 6 Feb 1803 of John Boxall and Jane Hill at Tillington.

There is a baptism of a William Etherton 6th June 1802 at Storrington parents John Etherton and Catherine. John Etherton and Cathrine Standing married by banns 19 Jul 1786 at Lodsworth. Witnesses James Canner, John Shepherd. The Etherton's seem to have moved from Easebourne to Storrington as per a poor law settlement record dated 28 Jul 1792. 1841 census had John Etherton's occupation as a Smith. Ann listed after him on 1841 maybe a 2nd wife?  John's first son John was baptised at Madehurst/Midhurst.

Catherine Etherton Burial 4th April 1829 Storrington  St Mary Parish Register.

John Etherton aged 83 years Burial 2 Mar 1843 Storrington.  Deaths Registered Jan-Feb-Mar 1843 ETHERTON, JOHN 83 GRO Reference: 1843 M Quarter in THAKEAM UNION Volume 07 Page 355

A John Etherton was baptised 30 Dec 1759 at Greatham, Wiggonholt father Hugh Edderton mother Susan. Alternatively there is an Edmund Etherton who married Elizabeth Todman in 1765 at Easebourne so maybe they are John's parents?

Hi, I'm struggling to make out this handwriting and wondering if ye good people on rootschat can help me please.

William Etherton at the Prince of Wales in Chichester on the 1861 census of Sussex, England

In the occupation column it says Blacksmith but I was wondering what follows that?

(The 1841 and 1851 census has his occupation as a Blacksmith)

Could maybe be this one?

Cathrine Purves 14th September 1793 Kelso, Roxburghshire
father John Purves mother Elisabeth Kirk

I think Kelso is about 16 odd miles from Chirnside as the crow flies?

newest update -
Scotland 88%
Wales 6%
Ireland 4%
England & Northwestern Europe 2%

previous update -
Scotland 84%
England & Northwestern Europe 14%
Wales 2%

So in the last two updates I have went from having no Welsh to 2% and now 6% despite having no Welsh ancestors that i can find.  I do have Cornish in my tree which i have traced quite far back. I reckon this has been lumped in with their Welsh grouping.

In the original update I lost my 2% Scandinavian which i actually felt was more accurate. I think that went to my Scottish total.

The new Irish addition maybe slightly high although i have indeed found Irish on one line.
