Derbyshire Lookup Requests / John and Robert Thornley Hadfield/Glossup circa 1770
« on: Wednesday 02 November 11 22:38 GMT (UK)  »
Good evening one and all!!

I am seeking some assistance in identifying the parents of some of my Thornley ancestors from the Glossup/Hadfield area circa 1770.

These ancestors are John and Robert Thornley, prominant Derbyshire Mill owners of that time.  Bear with me whilst I identify what I have confirmed of their lineage.

The confirmed line starts with the marriage of Anne Thornley (bapt 14/9/1828 Quarnford Staffs 2.9 miles from Edge Hill and 8 miles from Leek which probably ties in with census returns) and Thomas Clegg (bapt 18/6/1826 St Peters, Bolton-le-Moor).  They married 10/1/1856 at Walton on the hill, Lancaster.  A witness was Annes sister Fanny.  Annes father is recorded as Thomas Thornley (confestioner) and Thomas's father is William Clegg (shoemaker).

I believe the parents of Ann Thornely were:
Thomas Thornley b 7/8/1785 bapt 4/9/1785 Glossup
Ann Holehouse bapt 23/6/1793 Darley Dale

I believe Thomas Thornleys father was John Thornley the Mill owner but can find no confirmed BMD details for John.  Thomas Thornleys mother is possibly Mary Garlick.

In 1804 it is reported that John Thornley built the methodist chapel in Hadfield after having a fright in a thunderstorm and promising his wife he would build the chapel. In 1780 I believe John owned the Bridgend Fulling Mill on Glossup Brook and with brother Robert owned valehouse Mill.  They also have connections with  Coombs and Holehouse Mills.

Grateful for any information any forum member may have on John and Robert Thornley and their ancestors

Many thanks

This is a photo of Dr Walter Clegg (1858-1919) and his family circa 1909.  Walter was a prominent Liverpool Doctor at the turn of the 19th/20th Century.  It would be greatly appreciated if some kind forum member could get rid of the creases and touch up the picture slightly.  Very many thanks.

Good skills Dee reference the TATEs and many thanks.

The fact that you can't find any domestic record for George Thornley Clegg in the Australian archives doesn't really surprise me as he was only there for a relatively short period.  It will probably remain a mystery exactly where he lived and worked during the period 1925-31 having got off his ship in Melbourne.....I just hate mystery's I cant solve!!

Many thanks for your efforts though..greatly appreciated.
