Wiltshire / Thomas Batchelor Norris 1785-1844
« on: Thursday 30 January 14 05:14 GMT (UK)  »
Seeking information on origin of his middle name, father, and other relatives on his father's side.  Thomas was born in Chisledon and died in Gloucester. His mother was Martha Osman Norris.  I speculate that Thomas was born out of wedlock to a man called Batchelor.

Hi Jenny

https://sphere.ocba.sa.gov.au/cgi-bin/fccgi.exe?w3exec=PrepApplic&w3ServerPool=bdmsa

This is the link to apply for a death certificate from SA Government records - cost about AUD$40 (not cheap).

I did a quick search in Trove (http://trove.nla.gov.au/) without success and also Australian Cemeteries (http://www.australiancemeteries.com/) without success.

Cando, you continue to surprise me!

I am a Port Adelaide Football Club fan - born and raised in the area.  My great grandfather, Harry Lane (William Henry) was closely involved with PAFC (see Trove for The Advertiser Monday 8 October 1934, page 21, The Advertiser Tuesday 8 March 1927, page 15).

I am delighted to find more links to PAFC through Ted Strawns, and will definitely visit Cheltenham Cemetery to view the grave of Edward STRAWNS and his wife Elizabeth Ann.  I have spent a lot of time in this cemetery.  William Henry Lane (my great grandfather) and great grand mother Jane Louise Payne are buried together in this cemetery, along with many other relatives.

Many thanks Cando, all this extra information will keep me busy.  The really good thing is that I now have a solid lead about Mary Farrell's origins, which is what I was hoping for when I posted this topic.

Cando

Eliza Lane was born 26 Dec 1861 to John and Mary.  That is the only hard information I have.  Based on the reference to John's funeral leaving from Mr Edward Shaw's residence, I presumed that he and Eliza were married, as he was the only son-in-law.  If there were other daughters I don't know about then that could open up new lines of enquiry.

I wondered whether Shaw and Straws could get mixed up when placing a death notice in the paper.  The digitised version I have is quite clear that it was printed as Shaw.

I take your point that marriage of John and Mary in 1854 and first recorded child Eliza in 1861 is a big gap.  I can't find any other birth records earlier than this, yet you mention Catherine's birth in 1856.  Can you let me have more search details for this record please?

As a matter of interest, there are no Straws buried in the Cheltenham Cemetery.  There is an Edward Albert Shaw (died 23 April 1920, 69 y-o) buried in the West Terrace Cemetery, and an Elizabeth Shaw (died 02 March 1911, 48 y-o).

You have given me several helpful leads to follow up.

Thanks

Bob

Thanks again Sue (sparret).  I am learning the hard way that "factual information" can be misleading.  Hopefully, there are people researching Lane and Farrell who will spot these posts and offer leads.

Thanks Sue (sparret).  To be honest, I am not entirely sure which couple (John Lane and Mary Farrelly married 1856 in Willunga, and John Lane and Mary Farrell married 1854 in Adelaide) are my gg grandparents.  I have traced the history of both and the evidence points more to the second couple.  Here are some of my earlier notes on these people:-

1. John Lane is given as father of William Henry Lane born 10 March 1867 at Rosewater; mother was Mary Farrell; vol 50 page 579
2. John Lane is given as father of Henery Lane marriage 27 September 1893 to Jane Louisa Payne, father Thomas Payne, at Port Adelaide vol 176 page 1093
3. John Lane married 21 April 1856 to Mary Farley at Willunga, vol 25 page 152 - no direct relation (see comments on Charles and Maria Lane)
4. Record above conflicts with John Lane marriage 28 September 1854 to Mary Farrell, at Gawler Place Adelaide, vol 19 page 69
5. jellytree2010 family tree indicates John Lane married 21-4-1856 at Willunga to Mary Farrelly, children James Lane 1859-1937 and Eliza Jane Lane 1866-1899
6. jellytree2010 indicates Mary Farrelly died 17 January 1882 in Rosewater - This is refuted by book about Lanes in Australia  Maria died in 1916 in Millicent.

Who is my 2nd great grand father?  Assume for now that he was John Lane married in Adelaide to Mary Farrell since is was not John Lane son of Charles Lane and Maria Adlam.  The book "The family of Charles and Maria Lane in Australia, 1804-2004" contains clear evidence that I am not related to this family through John Lane married to Mary Farrell.

This bears out your comment about Biographical Index of South Australia.  Not always correct!!

Australia / John Lane and Mary Farrell married 28-9-1854 Adelaide

I am seeking information on my great great grandparents.  They married on 28 Sep 1854 in Gawler Place, Adelaide, South Australia and lived in Rosewater.  Mary was 23 y-o spinster and John was 27 y-o batchelor and labourer.  I do not know their counties of birth or times of arrival in South Australia except for a comment in her death notice that she arrived in the colonies in 1853.  The notice also asked Melbourne papers to copy so I presume she had relatives or friends living in Victoria.  Mary died 17 Jan 1882 in Rosewater, and John died 10 Jan 1898 in Clarke Street Rosewater.  His occupation was listed as stevedore on the death certificate.  The birth certificate for William Henry indicated John's occupation was mariner.

Mary and John Lane had four children (William Henry born 10 Mar 1867 Rosewater died 01 Sep 1947 College Park, Eliza born 26 Dec 1861 in Port Adelaide, John born 27 Jul 1859 Alberton died 01 Feb 1903 Adelaide, Edward born 29 Mar 1864 Rosewater died 13 Sep 1947 Gawler).  William Henry Lane (my great grandfather) married Jane Louise Payne 27 Sep 1893.

Thanks

Thanks again, Cando.

My tree is on ancestry (Hughes family tree 28-1-12).  I agree that it is a possibility that TH arrived in Australia as ship's crew sometime before wife Mary and children followed him in 1927, and left the same way, either back to the UK or elsewhere.  I am hoping that a visit to the SA Maritime Museum in Port Adelaide may help me.  He is reported (Advertiser 9-11-1927 in Trove) as saying "He was working at sea for about three years, living away from home".  The period he was referring to is unclear to me as the SA Directory published by Sands and McDougall lists him as residing in Coburg Road, Alberton, South Australia from about 1927-1931 while working as a wharf labourer in Port Adelaide.  Electoral records in the SA State Library may help me confirm the actual time period.

He served in the merchant navy until about 1920 if I have interpreted correctly details on his CR10 card (ID 463797) and BT350_121037 form.  This fits with the birth dates of his two younger children (John Willian Ernest born 1924, and Vera May born 1923).  The next youngest was Kathleen Florence born in 1916.  Or, his three year period away from home was after his discharge in 1920.  I speculate from this possibility that the court report of him calling the younger children bad names may refer to his belief that they were not his children.

I have begun searching for death and other records of him in Australia but no luck so far.

Any other suggestions or advice would be most welcome.

Bob
