Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Re: Place of marriage
« on: Sunday 01 April 18 16:38 BST (UK)  »
I found this from the history of Galashiels about Westhouses.

'To the west from Gattonside about half a mile there is a good ferry-boat
on Tweed called the Westhouses boat house. This boat, having a good pool,
and being the ordinary passage from the south to Edinburgh, is much
frequented. They have likewise a good fishing for salmon. Above the boat
is Westhouses, the old possession of the Ormistons for many years. They
have a good house here with many vaults, and gun holes on every side after
the old form. I have seen their names on the principal gate, Anno 1581.
They had the custom of the bridge while it was standing. This place was in
the possession of the Pringles of Blindlee for some time, and now belongs to
Mr Scott of Galashiels."

Berwickshire / Re: Guide or information for where ancestors worked?
« on: Thursday 29 March 18 09:39 BST (UK)  »
You may never find out more than you already know (and that it quite a lot compared to many of us).

If they were farm workers they may have moved from place to place for work and lived on the various farms rather than living in one location and travelling long distances to work. People generally lived and worked within walking distance. It may be that they were not working for one employer, but moved around taking whatever jobs were available in the area.

I may be wrong of course, but I think some labouring work was seasonal and itinerant.  :)

Thanks Ruskie, sorry for the late reply

Hi All, i was just wondering if anyone can clarify what a part of a marriage document says.
This is for my relative Margaret Anderson who married David Sanderson in Galashiels, Scotland in 1853.

To me it says "mist houses" ? that seems like a unusual name?

I can crop the who section if needed?

thanks in advance

Selkirkshire / Re: Request lookup Anderson
« on: Thursday 29 March 18 06:13 BST (UK)  »
IV26.  THERE ARE OVER 25 ENTRIES FOR ANDERSONS IN THE AULD KIRKYARD SELKIRK. I SUGGEST YOU BUY THE CD FROM THE  BORDER FAMILY HISTORY SOCIETY. IT HAS FULL PHOTOS OF EACH HEADSTONE .ONE WAS THE WIFE TO MUNGO PARK THE EXPLORER AND OTHERS DOCTORS AND. SURGEONS AND SOME DIED IN OZ AND USA. WORTH A LOOK.

Hi alan14578, thanks for the information on that, i will look into getting that cd, i have looked at the Andersons in selkirk and in particular the Anderson who was a surgeon linked to Mungo park, but i can't seem to find a link to my family, there was also a Anderson who was a farmer and one who was a mason around the 1830-1850s period.
The Anderson and mungo link makes interesting reading and one of the sons went with Mungo on his journey to explore africa, but unfortunately died there.

Berwickshire / Anderson / Paterson age differences on census and death certificate
« on: Tuesday 20 March 18 11:28 GMT (UK)  »
Hi all, i just had a query in regards to ages that are shown on census and other paperwork not matching.

I know in the 1841 census they apparently rounded down to the nearest 5 but even taking that into account the ages are quite different.

I am not sure if this is the lady in question telling little white lies about her age  :P or the way the person who wrote it down changed it?

This is the information i have

I have Christian Anderson born to James Anderson and Elizabeth Ford in Reedyloch Berwickshire on the 22 Sep 1802.

I have her dying in Coldingham, berwickshire in 1856 name Christina aged 52 married to a Alexander Paterson

However when i looked up the 1841 and 1851 census they are out a lot

i found one in 1841 Alexander Paterson 35, Christian 25??? as well as 5 children aged from 20-4 also they had a Mary Anderson aged 65 living with them who i am not sure who she is, she had a sister Mary but in 1841 should have been only 33ish

In 1851 i Have them in Coldingham Berwickshire owning a farm Alex Paterson is 52, Christian 40, one of the sons Alexander (jr) matches in age to the previous census as he was 9 in 1841 and 19 in 1851 and i am guessing their daughter Elizabeth/Betty is the same 7 then 16, but they had a daughter Isabella who was 4 and should have only been 13-14 and doesn't show in the 1851 (couldn't find her doing a quick check to see if working or with relatives)

In short  :P

Christian being "25" in 1841 when even with rounding up by 4 to 29 is still around 10-14 yrs difference??

in 1851 she added 15 years to herself and he added 17!! I know they were hard times back then but that too much hehehe  ;D

Mary Anderson doesn't show up on the 1851 census so i assumed she either died or moved in with another family?

Has anyone else had such huge differences in stated ages?

Thanks in advance.
