Family History Beginners Board / Re: Could I be James IIII ?
« on: Sunday 06 October 13 13:14 BST (UK)  »
Hi All, just to say I got onto the 1911 census and found Emma and James :

Joseph Redgrave 70 widow carpenter  b Rayleigh
James Green boarder 28 news vendor
Emma Green wife  28  born  looks like Canon, Lancs ??
Sarah Green daughter 27 single
Charles Redgrave son 13 b Stepney
Eliza Green daughter ? months b Poplar

Residing 38 Belgrave St, Stepney

Looks like they have only 1 child in approx 10 years of marriage. Perhaps there were infant deaths.
Any thoughts on the above?

Thanks for all your help. Getting used to the research a bit more so will sign up and look for more ancestors. James

Thanks again for your input ~ things slow this end due to a back injury.  Things not too clear through a fog of Codeine! A few points though ~

Emma was age 20 and JWG 21 on their marriage cert  (14 Sept 1902) he being down as a news agent. Their witnesses were Joseph Redgrave and Sarah Green. Annette has confirmed their fathers' occupations.  I have a vague memory of my father referring to JR as his 'cousin'.  Other family input, maybe unreliable is that of a 'relationship' between Emma and JR at some time.

Another point  re 'Fisherman/fish salesman could Robert have worked at Billingsgate in some capacity?  I'll make more sense of it all when I get a little tree down on paper and draw up a time line. Thanks again folks James

A huge thank you to Ruskie, Keyboard, Carole and Annette for your amazing and helpful response. Spent most of the day trying to get my head around all the detail and having no luck using Freebmd. They won't accept my choice of criteria so I've given up. Must know I'm a 'newby'. Currently trying to put a 'tree' in order and checking dates where possible.

Regarding JWG the news vendor (sold papers at The Bank, City of London) facing steps of The Royal Exchange.  Have you seen the statue ~ the family said he 'served under Wellington'.  I don't have details of his birth but he set up the business following discharge from the army after the end of WWI and was aged 21 on his marriage to Emma Shrimpton on 14th Sept 1902. (Emma was 20 years old).

I need to get the knack of using Freebmd and looking up the Cencus ~ so far no luck. Any tips would be much appreciated if you have time. James

My first attempt at family history research ever   ???  I'd be grateful for any help in finding my ancestors. My grandfather James William Green (market porter) married ??  His son JWG also (news agent) married my grandmother Emma Shrimpton 14 September 1902 at St Saviours Church, Denmark Hill SE London.  Emma's father, also a James William is down as a dock labourer on the marriage certificate. (Both fathers are deceased at the time of the marriage). I'd like to find out who James and Emma's fathers were married to and also my great grandfather JWG. I have vague memories of my grandmother Emma from my childhood and would love to know more. In addition to producing my father, emma and James also had George, Charles, Sally and 'Lal' (the eldest). 'Charlie' rumour has it,  was so good at safe cracking that he not only 'did time' for it but his talents were used officially during WWII. Any more information would be very gratefuly received. James.

Yes, sorry you did ask - George's age at his marriage to Annie is 25 years and his father James Thompson dec'd. was formerly a licensed victualler. If it helps somehow, Annie's father Wm Wheale's occupation is .. looks like viewer or viciver of guns. Never heard of it. Thanks again for your time.

PaulineJ  thank you for your help. I'm new to ancestry research and have yet to use a census. What does 'good' 1911 census mean please?  first I'm getting to grips with all my old  'inherited'  documents.  My last posting shows the occupation you are asked about. Bev

Annette thank you for the information.  I have gone through the old documents that I inherited and have the marriage cert for Annie Wheale and George Thompson m 15/8/1878. His occupation is 'Gentleman'. They are both residing at Montague Cottage, Montague Rd, looks like Heresen or Hereven,Ramsgate.

I also have the birth cert for their son George Bunkre who was born ..... 23/7/1878 !! George Snr's occupation is that of an Annuitant. Could this be some kind of pension ~ I don't think the family were affluent?   George Jnr it says was born at Montague Rd, St Lawence, whilst Annie's address is down as 47 Enfield Lock, Enfield. Seems like they moved around a bit.

I'm new to family history research but am lucky enough to have a collection of old documents, some going back to the 1700's. I'm learning as I go along trying to piece together the information and match it to old photographs.

I'll keep up the detective work ~ thanks again.

Researching my great grandmother Annie Wheale who married George Bunkre Thompson 15.8.1878 in Thanet, Kent. Any kind person have information regarding him or her ?  Would be pleased to hear. Also if anyone has come across 'Bunker' as a name before - could it be connected to the Battle of Bunkre Hill?   I believe their son George was born in Ramsgate, Kent. Would like to get back further - Annie's parents  were Matilda and William Wheale and George's father James.  Am interested to know anything of their life in Kent.
