I made a mistake in my initial post, Daniel Betton was my 3 x great grandfather, sentenced to 10 years transportation alongside his nephew George Betton for stealing wood and fowl.

George is the son of Edward Betton, Daniels older brother.  Edward's third son, John, was also transported for 7 years in 1846 for stealing 2 rabbits and 2 fowl.

I have written 2 case studies on Daniel and George as part of a diploma of family history I am studying at the University of Tasmania, they each didn't fair well after their arrival in the colonies George finding himself on Norfolk Island at one point during his sentence.

John's story is a little less scant but he did have a longer, less traumatic journey.

If anyone is interested in more information on these three Betton's contact me via my email address carol.brunt@yahoo.com.au

Daniel betton Snr was my 6x great grandfather Daniel Jnr my 5th.  For me the line then goes 4th great grandfather John betton born 1754 3rd great grandfather Daniel born 1790-1844. Daniel Betton born 1790 was transported to van diemans land (Tasmania) in 1839 and at this moment I am sitting waiting for a flight to Tasmania! Daniel was accidentally killed in a farming accident in 1844 and while I am in tassie I will visit the area where he died!

Staffordshire / Elizabeth Ray nee Townsend

Am looking ofr a death listing for my paternal great grandmother Elizabeth (Eliza) Ray nee Townsend and her daughter Mary Ellen Ray.

Elizabeth Townsend married my great grandfather Richard Ray on the 9 Oct 1882 at the Parish Church in Fenton.

In 1886 at the time of my grandfathers birth they were living at Mear Lane, Caverswall and by 1891 had moved to 110 Wood Street in Longton.

In January 1892 their youngest child Ann Elizabeth Ray died at the age of 8 years and their residence was given as 12 Castle Street, Longton.
In October of this same year they baptised their two remaining daughters Lilian May Ray aged 4 and Mary Ellen Ray aged 1 on the same day.  My grandfather had been baptized already in the same year of his birth 1886.

This is the last known whereabouts of my great grandmother Elizabeth Ray and her daughter Mary Ellen. I obtained the baptismal account for Lilian May and Mary Ellen from 1892 and their mother is presumed to be alive.

By 1901 my great grandfather Richard Ray and grandfather James are lodging at 4 Peel Street, Fenton.  Richard's marital status still says *married* but Elizabeth's whereabouts are a mystery.  Lilian May is living at Ley Farm in Gomms Mill Longton with her uncle William Ray. Mary Ellen also disappears from the radar.

Staffordshire / Ley Farm - Gomms Mill - Longton - Ray Family

I am hoping to find researchers who know anything about Ley Farm in Gomms Mill, Longton.

This farm was tennanted and farmed initially by my 2nd great grandfather  James Ray from around 1850.  After his death in 1875 it was passed to his son William who farmed it till his death in 1913. William's widow Elizabeth Ellen Ray and  their children continued to farm the land and it was eventually sold to Elizabeth Ellen Ray in 1928 from the local property owner JHE Heathcote as per his will.

I would love to hear from anyone who knows anything about Ley Farm particularly if anyone has any photos or is related to the Ray's of Ley Farm.
