Yes, my next question is are you sure William's father is correct and/or, was your William born out of wedlock?
It's interesting how similar the names of the 2 Williams are.
I'm very sure that the David Percy I have only had 9 children & the William I have was never married & was in fact engaged for about 50yrs! & no known children.
So I was beginning to wonder whether your neice was born out of wedlock.
You should get some clarification when you get the certificates.

I was hoping to find someone who had lived on the street or at least knew the street & the families that had lived there along with the 'Woods' back in the 1930's -40's but no luck so far.

I'm confussed with the names you've supplied -
Do you mean William Lawrence Charles Woods (birth - 25 Aug 1917 - death - 13 Jan 2004) as the father?
and David Percy Woods (26 Jul 1888 - 09 Feb 1931) as the grandfather?
and William Woods (b.1860 - d.27 Oct 1912) as the great grandfather?
If so, I didn't know that Bill had any children!

If you look on the 'Builth Wells Heritage Society' facebook page, they posted a distant picture of the Builth Workhouse.

Hi Ruth,

This is somewhat delayed from when you first posted your question about Rock House Llanelwedd. Since I last wrote I have been looking through the council records that cover Llanelwedd (Colwyn Rural District Council). I came across the following item & remembered your post on Rootschat. The council  meeting minutes for the 9th September 1963 record an item titled 'Re: Rock Cottage, Llanelwedd'.
'The Council considered the condition of the above mentioned house under the provisions of Section 16 of the Housing Act 1957 and the Owner, having through his Solicitors, offered an Undertaking, it was proposed by Councillor A.A. Higginbottom, seconded by Councillor D.E.M.Worts, and CARRIED that the Council accept an Undertaking that the house known as Rock Cottage, Llanelwedd, shall not be used for human habitation until the Council are satisfied that it has been rendered fit for that purpose and cancel the Undertaking'.

Basically the Council were condemning the property. I believe that a later entry indicated that the owner did not challenge the Council order. So it must be from that date that the property slowly fell down.
Rock Cottage/House is clearly not the property I was describing. That semi-detached property which is still standing & occupied I now believe to be called Sunnyside.
I believe that I used to walk past Rock Cottage ruins as a child in the 1970's. The derelict building  sat above and very close to the road. About 100yds to the left of Sunnyside & closer to Lugano Bungalow (also still there) which sits below the road. There used to be a very steep set of steps near these ruins that went up from the road to a walkway behind the hedgerow that locals & quarry workers used to use.

Radnorshire / Hospital in Rhayader Radnorshire 1940's
« on: Tuesday 12 May 15 01:39 BST (UK)  »
does anybody know what hospital/s were in existence in Rhayader in the early 1940's? A hospital where a child might have gone to, possibly to be treated for Scabies as an inpatient?

Abery's photo of the house was taken in the 1920's. The house stood there in the 1960's & today is exactly the same building as in Abery's photo.
Since the 1960's there has not been a different house near to the current Rock View house.

I walked most of the quarry grounds from the 1960's. There may have been ruins of buildings along a pathway running parallel with the road, on the north side of the road, between the current Rock View & Llanelwedd corner (junction of A481 & A483) but those ruins could also have been old quarry buildings?
You should be able to judge if it's the same house from the location of the building on the old maps to the location of the current house.

The house was probably well built with local granite stone from the quarry behind! Maybe the house was newly re-built on the original site soon before Abery photographed the house in the 1920's?

Hi  aghadowey,

Yes, I was fortunate that Mary put both her parents on the marriage cert' in Aust' - John Ryan, farmer & Johanna Welsh. The names were the same & same spelling as in the baptism record we found.
We didn't look up baptism for any siblings for Mary, we didn't have enough time, at the moment I don't have any sibling names for Mary.
That's a good idea if someone has access to the baptism records, to look for siblings using the parents names.
William Finch was born in London, I have Suffolk connections for him back to 1736.
He went out to Aust' with a different wife & child. His first marriage in London was 1857, a daughter Eveline was born in London in 1858, he left for Aust' soon after 1858 as on Eveline's birth cert' he has changed his job to Ship's Steward. I believe that he worked his passage to Aust. He is a sailor on Adeline's birth cert' in Queensland & later when back in London he becomes a greengrocer.
I do not know what happened to his first wife & daughter in Australia.

Hi Everyone,
I'm looking for help please. I recently attended the WDYTYA - Live at the NEC, I had a great show, very successful info' gathering time.
While at the show someone looked up for me on RootsIreland.ie and appears to have found the baptism of Mary Ryan (1837-1901).
Mary was baptised on 4th May 1837. Parish/District was Pallasgree / Tamplebredon. I understand that this parish crosses between Limerick & Tipperary. Parents were John Ryan, farmer & Johanna Welsh. Godparents were: Terrence Meagher & Margaret Hogan. Roman Catholic religion.
Mary Ryan went to Australia, I'm not sure when or whether she travelled directly or via Liverpool or whether she travelled alone.
On the 31st October 1865, in Australia she married William George Finch (1834-1907) in Ipswich Queensland. Witnesses were Robert G Oxford & Susan Oxford. They had a daughter Adeline Finch(30th July 1867 - 11 Aug 1889) born in Grantham, Queensland.
By 4th Jan 1870 when their second child was born the family had returned to London.
I am looking to go backwards for further Irish information about Mary's parents, birth location, her travel to Australia & possibly their return to London. If anyone has access to appropriate sites I would appreciate further information or direction, thanks.
