Cork / John McCarthy and Ellen Deasy Rosscarbery
« on: Thursday 13 April 23 05:34 BST (UK)  »
Hi Everyone,

I am looking for some help to locate the family of John McCarthy and Ellen Deasy they are my 2nd Great Grand Aunt and Uncle. I have located their marriage record and the baptisms of their 7 children.

John McCarthy and Ellen Deasy married 12 Feb 1861 Rossalettiri and Kilkeraunmor (Rosscarbery) no civil registration so no parents names. I know Ellen Deasy is the daughter of Michael Deasy and Ellen Donovan of Cregg, Kilfaughnabeg, Cork, Ireland. I do not have parents for John McCarthy though.

Children are;

Mary McCarthy 30 Nov 1861 Barley Hill, Roscabery   witness: Patrick Deasy, Mary McCarthy
Julia McCarthy 11 FEb 1864   Ardagh, Rosscarbery
Patrick McCarthy 22 Jan 1867 Ardagh, Rosscarbery
Ellen McCarthy 18 July 1869  Ardagh, Rosscarbery
Catherine McCarthy 17 Feb 1872 Froe, Rosscarbery
John McCarthy 28 Jan 1874 Ardagh, Rosscarbery
Honora McCarthy 6 May 1877 Cross Rock, Rosscarbery

The civil registrations can be found on www.irishgenealogy.com use the last name CARTHY marriage for John McCarthy and Ellen Deasy can be found on same site in CHURCH RECORDS. I included the witnesses for the first child Mary McCarthy because the witnesses are my Great Great Grandparents which is how I confirmed this was the correct family, Ellen and Patrick are siblings.

This is as far as I got cannot find marriages, passenger lists, census etc I am at a dead stop, hoping some more eyes on the problem might catch something I missed. Any and all help is appreciated!

Thanks  Maria

Dublin / Cregan? Creaghan? or Craven?
« on: Thursday 30 March 23 23:03 BST (UK)  »
Hi Everyone,

I have the marriage record for my 3rd Great Grandparents Malachi Crowe and Margaret Cregan marriage took place on 19 Jan 1831 Rathfarnham, Dublin, Ireland. I also have the baptisms for their children on the baptism for their daughter Margaret Maria Crowe 2 July 1841 the parents are listed as Malachi Crowe and Margaret CRAVEN. I found out they were buried in Glasnevin Cemtery and there were other family members buried there as well, several of the family members had the last name of CRAVEN; so now I am puzzled as to whether my 3rd Great Grandmother is Margaret Cregan? old Irish spelling CREAGHAN, or Margaret Craven? Does anyone know if Craven is a variation of Creaghan?? Any information you can provide will be appreciated!

Mary has previous from 1896 for stealing a shirt, and a note of an earlier assault conviction in Cardiff. The 1896 entry notes b Co Cork

Peter Dacey aged 32, b Co Cork convicted of drunkenness in October 1886

I have possible later sightings of Michael Dacey

1895 - sentenced to 7 days or pay 17/5 for breach of the Pubic Health Act. Place of birth noted as Glandore. he is however aged 62

1900 - imprisoned again for wilfully neglecting his children. Given 1 month hard labour. Aged 64. Born Co Cork
Mary Dacey aged 42 was committed for the same offence on the same date

Hi Mabel,

Where did you find these entries? I'd like to know for my notes before adding to the family tree! Thanks!  Maria

You post says “Born 25.6.1846”

In 1891 he is 32yrs old which does not equate to an 1846 birthyear??   His brother Michael is 35

Have you discounted the 1892 death in Merthyr for Peter Dacey aged 30?  No other Peter Dacey on the 1891 in Glamorgan

Hi Carole,

I have the ledger entry for the Ireland, Civil Registration Marriages Index for Michael Deasy and Mary Donovan it gives their ages as Michael 24 and Mary 19.

Ireland, Catholic Parish Baptism Registers
Michael Deasy baptism 4 Feb 1844
Born: Cregg, Kilfaughnabeg Parish, Cork

Ireland, Catholic Parish Baptism Registers
Mary Donovan baptism 15 April 1854
Born: Cregg, Kilfaughnabeg, Cork, Ireland

The baptism dates show that at the time of their marriage their true ages were

Michael 27 and Mary 17

I believe they lied about their ages to shrink the age gap between them from 10 yrs to 5 yrs..

The baptisms show that Michael would be 37 on the 1881 Wales Census and Mary would be 27 which means that Michaels age is off by 7 yrs and Mary's is off by 2 yrs. Mary's age being off by 2 yrs is very plausible and Michael's age being off by 7 yrs is not impossible because the census takers I've been told were not highly educated people they came from the middle class and not everyone back then in the middle class went to school, so mistakes were bound to happen. Michael was 2 yrs older than Peter so their ages would have been close; as for the 1892 death for Peter Dacey I have only the Civil Registration Death Index online no ledger entry for this record, can't say anything for sure. I did put in my tree as there is nothing else for Peter Dacey after 1892, his nephew John Peter Dacey was named for him when he was born in 1892. So about 80% sure it's my Peter Dacey.

Looks like "Unloading Coal" and "Above" overwrites the original?

Correction - went straight to original and deduced "Unloading coal" only to go to transcript and find it had already been transcribed as "Uloading coal!".

Thank you, I agree its either Unloading or loading coal.

Hi  hope this helps
The village of Dowlais (  Black Brook)  developed around the Dowlais ironworks  under the management  of  Josiah John Guest   it developed to become the largest ironworks in the world with the workforce of 5000 in the 1840`s.  This iron company   imported  iron ore from  Spain
One of the following generations

After R.T. Crawshay's death, his sons reopened the works, but soon closed again for a long and costly rebuild that was not complete until 1884, while a steel works was constructed. Crawshay Brothers, Cyfarthfa, Limited continued the business until 1902, when the works were sold to Guest Keen and Nettlefolds Limited, the proprietors of the Dowlais Ironworks.

By 1910, the steelworks had been forced to close again, and while it was briefly reopened in 1915 to aid in the production of materials for World War I, the works closed for the last time in 1919. It fell into disrepair until it was dismantled in 1928. The failure of the works was a devastating blow to the local community, as it had depended heavily on the works for its economic livelihood.

Guest Keen and Nettlefolds was transfered to Cardiff it later was known as Allied Steel and Wire I was employed as an industrial nurse there before its closure
