Cumberland / Carruthers & Armstrong in Lanercost 1755
« on: Tuesday 10 May 22 15:11 BST (UK)  »
Hi,
I wonder if anyone has any info on this couple who married 12 Jan 1755 in Lanercost, Cumberland?
He was Wm Carruthers and she Mary Armstrong. They appear in the legacy of a Jane Armstrong, spinster's will 1767, Brampton, Cumberland: 'Mary Carruthers wife of William Carruthers Quartermaster in the barracks of Dublin' referred to in Rootschat comment.

Wm was later made Cornet in the Irish First Regiment of Horse. Sons James, John, Joseph also entered the military. Daughter Anne married Erasmus Goodwin, another military man. Daughter Susannah Maria (possibly born Hanover Sq, Middx 1765) married Dublin lawyer Wm Magrath.

So, I first have them in Ireland in 1767 - but don't know anything of their families or when/why they went to Ireland exactly. Any info welcome, but particularly their connections to England/Scotland.
Many thanks.

Hi,
Well, I don't know whether you are still on the case after 13 years ;D BUT the Mary Armstrong mentioned in your Jane Armstrong's will was my gggg-gma - having married Wm Carruthers and gone to Ireland.
Happy to exchange info - I wish ::)

Other Countries / Carruthers in Brazil
« on: Saturday 07 August 21 17:52 BST (UK)  »
Hi,
Am looking for any further info on George Agnew Carruthers (&/or family) who traded in cottons in Brazil 1813-1827.
He was born to a military family that served in Ireland, but died Feb 1832 in London. He also had a home at Ramsgate.
His parents were Captain James Carruthers, First Regiment of Horse, d1786 and Frances Agnew died 10th Mar 1833.
In 1827 he dissolved his partnership with Wm Everard Smith, Wm Mitchell & Thos Lancaster, under the form of Carruthers, Smith & Pernambuco and Carruthers, Mitchell & Co at Pernambuco.

He gave evidence to the House of Lords Select Committee on the Affairs of the East India Company in 1830.

In his 1832 Will he gives considerable attention to the future of his 'natural daughter' Maria Louisa Carruthers b1828, committing his brother James and wife Jane to look after her affairs.  He doesn't mention her mother as such but did bequeath £1000 to a Maria [Jondin?] of Granby Buildings, London.

I did see the discussion at https://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=368980.msg5282273#msg5282273 on Carruthers trading in Brazil. I don't know if there is any connection, but he did have a brother William whom I know nothing about - Wm Carruthers being mentioned in the discussion.

Many thanks

London and Middlesex / Re: French residents in Southwark, early 19th century

Hi Queencorgi,

Re the context for French in London....I am not sure how much you now know about the French presence in London, but there were different waves of French immigrants, so that those arriving in the 19th century might have family already there or contacts.  There were French churches, schools, cemeteries etc.
You can find more out by Googling key words. Here's a couple of references if you haven't already 'been there done that' ;):

Armed Forces / Jas Carruthers - Irish or Scots?
« on: Tuesday 19 January 21 16:25 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,
I have a :
Capt Jas Carruthers Abt 1755-2nd Aug 1786, Ireland
Parents - Wm & Mary Carruthers
Wife - Frances Agnew Carruthers Abt 1753-10th Mar 1833, Ireland

I have the following reference for him from Findmypast:
1784 Cornet, Ist Horse, Blue, Blue Furn. Scotland, Edinburgh Field Officers from Almanacs 1758-1800 (no image FindMyPast)

My question is - does anyone know if this was  a Scots publication of army officers in general - or was it a publication of Scotland born Field Officers in the army?  I have evidence for him (and his father) in the First  Irish Regiment of Horse after 1784, but his sister seems to have been born in London in 1765.

This would/might help in looking for their birth.....
Many thanks

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Re: French document 1795
« on: Monday 11 January 21 21:29 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,
Couldn't read it all I'm afraid, but here's what I was able to pick out ...maybe others can add ;)

The English:
To which .... only first lot is made up of the house or ....... fireplace, and attic ....., with a cellar and bedroom. [After?] the ..... cellar the ..... a .....alignment with partial ....shelves in front of ....Buildings, the other part of the shelves will be used in the second lot.

Very more or less, and stands to be improved, but hopefully it will mean something to you.
 :)
