Brilliant!!! Thanks so much. Without guidance of people on this board, I could have looked a long time before finding it.

Thanks to all of you. I have now located Gordonbank on present day maps, so should be able to have a look around the vicinity when I am there. Your help is much appreciated.
One final question: Adam Hardie was said in 19th century family papers to have come from "The Merse". He was born in Parkwalls, Greenlaw Parish; had his first smithy in Orange Lane; and lived and worked in Stichill before emigrating. Would one or more of these locations lie within "The Merse"?

Thanks very much indeed for this information. If I don't locate Parkwalls, Gordonbank may well be as close as I can get.
Kind regards

Berwickshire / Parkwalls or Park Walls, Greenlaw

One of my ancestors, Adam Hardie, was born in Greenlaw in Berwickshire. I have the opportunity to visit the area soon and I would like to be able to locate his birthplace.

His OPR birth record reads"Adam, son of Thos Hardie in Parkwalls and Christian Robertson, his wife, Dec 20th 1786."

I have not been able to find where Parkwalls is, although it is mentioned in histories of families such as Redpaths. I have looked on various old maps, and recently bought the 1898 map of Duns and Greenlaw, but could not find it there.

Can anyone let me know if Parkwalls still exists? And if so, where is it?

Many thanks for your help.

I too am working on this family. I believe that Alexander Muir died before 1839 and therefore before the first census or statutory registration. The marriage record of Janet Muir (1811 - 1901) to John McBride reads:
John McBride, Seaman and Janet Muir, daughter of the late Alexander Muir, Tailor. Both of this parish [Campbeltown] were married 22nd January 1839

Janet's death record states that she was the daughter of Alexander Muir and Janet Wylie.

I think that Janet Wylie was alive, and living in Campbeltown in 1841 and 1851, but not in 1861. I believe that she died before statutory registration of deaths in 1855.

I'd be delighted to share information. I had noted your ancestors George Muir b 1878/9 in my records, but did not know what had happened to him.

Bob, Wendy and others.

I've been researching the family of Peter McDermid (various spellings) and Helen or Ellen Galbraith of Campbeltown for some time now. I was particularly interested to see the information on their son John (1803 - 1884) and his wife Catherine Brodie (1807 - 1882).

It may be helpful to know that Catherine's surname is an anglicisation of an older name: Brolachan. She was probably born in the Killean and Kilkenzie parish of Kintyre, Argyll in 1807 to Peter Brolachan and Catherine McConochy.

I'd be delighted to exchange information with other family members.

I've found GR to be generally good, and have made some excellent contacts. However ... recently two mysterious people, of whom I have never heard, have become attached as spouses to two people on my tree. I cannot remove them because an error message comes up stating "You do not have access to this tree".

One of those people had a unique name on GR, so I was able to contact the real owner of the tree, who is also unable to remove the person. I've given that person access to my tree, and she finds that she can get into her own tree from the 'ghost person' on my tree.

Whilst this technical problem is annoying, because my tree is now corrupted, I am much more troubled by the fact that it is extraordinarliy difficult to get a response from GR help. On messaging for the third time, I've been told that my problem has been passed to the technical team, who have a turnround time of five days - totally unacceptable.

Has anyone else had similar issues?
