Tyrone / Birth or migration records for Peter HOLLANDS/HOLLOND/HOLEN
« on: Monday 30 May 16 12:22 BST (UK)  »
Hello
I am researching my family and have hit a snag in tracing Peter HOLLANDS, aka HOLLOND or HOLEN who had listed Co Tyrone as his birthplace on his son's birth certificate in New South Wales, Australia. I am unsure when he migrated to Australia, but he was 45 at the time of the birth in 1884 and married Harriet Rosina HARMER in NSW, Aust in 1883, making his birth abt 1839. I would greatly appreciate some assistance in tracing him as I have searched online resources that I have access to for Ireland, but have had no real luck. Many thanks to anyone who may be able to help.
Many thanks

Australia / Australian Volunteers in the Spanish Civil War
« on: Saturday 07 February 15 07:06 GMT (UK)  »
Hello
I am looking for information about Australians who volunteered in the Spanish Civil War (1936-39). I believe my grandfather was a gun-runner during this time. I would like to know more about this, but records appear to be scarce. I have located a book written on the subject by Inglis, but don't have access to it and I am not sure what it contains anyway. I am wondering if anyone here has any information that they might be able to share about this? Many thanks in advance.

Thanks Sean
Yes I have that she had a sister named Ann who died at age 2, then her brother James and herself. Does baseborn mean born out of wedlock? I have been busily searching and I have now ordered her birth certificate and that of her mother (I hope), so maybe there might be some more info there. I will check out the SFHG membership, it might be a good investment!
I am wondering now how she would have raised the fee to pay to Australia at age 20. Any thoughts on this? She arrived in Australia in May 1883 and married in November that same year in Sydney.
Thanks again :)

Tyrone / Holland/s Peter Lookup County Tyrone
« on: Saturday 16 August 14 06:58 BST (UK)  »
Hello
I have recently traced my family to County Tyrone, Ireland where it seems my gg g/father was born c.1838. His name was Peter Hollands, also spelt Holland or Holen. He travelled to Australia at some point and was married there in New South Wales in 1883. He also used the alias Thompson at one point. I can't seem to locate any information about him and the information I do have is only from his marriage certificate (no parental details listed) and son's birth certificate in 1884. I am in the process of contacting the parish of his marriage to see if they have any further information that may not have been transcribed. Any other information or assistance as to where i could begin to look would be greatly appreciated. Thank you so much in advance

Sussex Lookup Requests / HARMER/FULLER family Sussex
« on: Saturday 16 August 14 05:55 BST (UK)  »
Hello
I am just starting to research my family from Battle, Sussex. From what I can gather, my gg g/mother was Harriett Rosina Harmer/Fuller b:1863 and traveled to Australia on board the 'Lochee' ship from Plymouth in 1883. I don't yet have her birth certificate. I am unsure of her father until I manage to get her birth certificate, but given that she has taken her mother's maiden name that information might not be available. Her mother was Ellen Augusta Harmer, who then married John Fuller in 1883 and the family is listed in the 1871 census with her two children (and his stepchildren) James and Harriet. The information I have is that Ellen's parents were named Mary Turner and Robert Carey Harmer. I haven't been able to confirm any of this and just wondered if there is anyone who may have any information that may help. Any assistance is greatly appreciated.
Thank you.

Australia / Re: Peter William Hollands, born Five Islands? NSW

I have found 2 Peter Hollands in Ireland via www.rootsireland.ie (not sure if this is the best place to search or not), neither for County Tyrone, but each of them for a neighbouring county - one in 1836 in County Monaghan and one in 1842 in County Armagh. I had calculated his birth date to be c. 1839 from age on son's birth certificate (45yrs in 1884). I am not sure which one of these he would be. Any ideas anyone?
Thanks

Thanks cupoflife, I can't find any listing for Hollands or any of the derivatives I can think of for a Queensland birth, so you may be correct. I will see what I can find for County Tyrone. :)

Hello Everyone
Just thought I would post an update on how this is all going. I have really appreciated all of the help that everyone has given. :)
I received the birth certificate for Peter Hollond and the marriage certificate for Peter Holon and Harriett Harmer from NSW BDM today. According to the dates and locations, etc they are for the same people despite the poor spelling. The birth certificate for Peter Hollond lists his father Peter Hollond as the informant and Harriett Rosina Harmer as his mother. It states the mother as being 20 at the birth in 1884 and born in England, which fits with the research done above. It says the marriage was in 1883 and the father was 45 at the birth, but the birth place is not discernible by me. It looks like it says 'O Tyrone'. The only thing I have been able to find that remotely fits that is Tyrone Station in Queensland, so it might be 'Q Tyrone', but I will have to try to investigate this further.
The marriage certificate doesn't have any information about parents, ages, or birthplaces unfortunately and is interesting as it lists Harriett as a widow and peter as a bachelor. The location is Kangaroo Mountain which is the same as for the birth certificate so I am fairly certain that these are for the same people, and the ones that I was searching for - my relatives. I have some more leads to work on now, so thank you all once again for all of your help!! :D
