The Common Room / Re: Fitches surname from Barton mills/Tuddenham way

Hi Tom,
I have checked and discovered that my Great Grandfather James Fitches had a brother called Isaac. Isaac married Emma Sangster and they had Alice Fitches in 1890.

Does this tie in with your research too?
Kind regards
Bev

Hi, thank you for your reply.
The Fathers name on the birth certificate is her Mothers husband (who was aware) and there is no name for her birth father.
I know its going to be very difficult to find a record of him.
Kind regards
Bev

Family History Beginners Board / Norwegian connection
« on: Monday 23 December 19 11:44 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,
I have recently had the DNA results I sent in for my Mother In Law. We have some distant matches; thats all.
My MIL has very limited information on who her Father was,she was born in UK in 1941, the daughter of an affair between her mother Kathleen Nora Dixon and a man named Anders/Andreas/Andras or something similar; no surname.
He was a harpoonist on a Norwegian ship on the Norwegian Shipping line and probably came over to the UK at this time as it was wartime.
He was born around 1900 in Norway and Kathleen was born 1917 in the UK.
When MIL was born, he wanted to see her but Kathleen was already married and this was not permitted.
He dropped money for her every week to the Norwegian Shipping Office at Southend Essex and Kathleen picked it up from there; although we are unsure how long this went on for.
She does know that her father was married and that his wife and two daughters were killed in Norway in the war.
MIL is nearly 80 and she would love to know a bit more about her family.
I know this is a long shot with very little info but here's hoping!
Kind regards
Beverley

Hi Tom,
I am so sorry, I have just seen your reply to my post and it’s about 2 years old! Thank you for your reply.
I have a large family tree on Ancestry (a work in progress) that you should be able to see and Alice is on there.
I am away at the moment and only have my phone on me but I will have a proper look on my computer when I get back home and see exactly where the connection is.
Kind regards
Beverley

The Common Room / Fitches surname from Barton mills/Tuddenham way

My family name is Fitches (not Fitch) on my Grandfathers side. His family all originated from the Barton mills and Tuddenham areas in Suffolk. I have traced the name back to the 1700’s - Thomas Fitches married Pheobe Jackson. My family tree is a work in process but I love the research. Would love to know if there are any other Fitches out there.

The Common Room / Francis E Walton bigamous marriage?
« on: Saturday 25 June 16 22:58 BST (UK)  »
Looking for information on Francis (Frank) E Walton who married a Mary A J Short in Brighton in 1935. She was I believe a nurse and he a doctor. The marriage was bigamus as he already had a family up North somewhere?? He was already married with a family (poss in Manchester/London area) so could have been quite a bit older than her I suppose. I know that he was sentenced to two years in prison for bigamy and apparently he was a Freemason in Hove and lived there but at which lodge and where I am unsure. My grandmother I think knew that he was already married as she registered my father's birth (Thomas Short) in her maiden name the following year when he was born.
There is a Francis E Walton who married a Lilian E Dobson in Steyning in 1934. My Grandmother Mary A J Short had my auntie Barbara in 1934 and registered her in Steyning under the name Shortt (2 t's?)???. She then 'married' FEW in Brighton in 1935. Am assuming that this could all tie in somewhere. I don't know a lot about my grandmother except that she originally came from Ireland (possibly Dublin). Apparently the bigamus marriage was all over The (Brighton) Argus newspapers front page at the time as it was a dreadful scandal (poss 1941/43) but I have not been able to find anything on this. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
