The Common Room / Help with valuation rolls questions please
« on: Monday 27 September 21 17:52 BST (UK)  »
Researching the history of my house and inhabitants, I've found a lot of very interesting info from the valuation rolls (Scotland); all the entries for my house list a single name for either proprietor or tenant. Do the valuation rolls only list the head of the household, or is it likely that all previous entries, all male, were single occupants?

The entries for my house only go back to 1904; this could mean either that the entries are missing (unlikely, as all others are present), or the house is of around that date. Where I live is a very old street, and I'm fairly sure that the house would have been here pre 1904.  The people I bought it from were told it dates back to 1800 but had no further information.  Can anyone suggest further avenues of investigation - eg  was in use other than a dwelling, or one big house made into two etc?

I've not been here long, and have still to visit the library here to see what I can find.  Any help or suggestions gratefully received  :)

Thankyou

I've just come across this old post whilst looking for something completely different - like you do!  My ggg grandfather was John Campbell Townsley, born Mochrum 1819.

I have sent an e-mail Bonnie - I hope it reaches you after all this time :)

A lot of water under the bridge since the original post...…
I got divorced in 2014 and have returned to live in Kirkpatrick Durham!
I've a friend who is very knowledgeable about local history/families - I'll be seeing her on Thursday and will try to find out if she knows anything to add to your research on the Dickson family. :)

The Lighter Side / More Carsphairn synchronicity
« on: Friday 29 December 17 00:05 GMT (UK)  »
On Facebook today a friend I went to school with posted from the tearoom in Carsphairn; I commented that my mother was born there, which led me to a conversation with a sister I didn't know he had. Turns out that after talking about family history, we are very likely related........ I went on to join the Ancestry site where I have contacted two potential family members. Best of all, in the space of a couple of hours, I have discovered photos of my great uncle, my great great uncle and my great great great uncle - who was born away back in 1798.
 I'm astounded.

In addition to Haugh of Urr, there is also the village of Bridge of Urr; the parish of Urr covers the Dalbeattie area.
Fairly close to Bridge of Urr is Little Park Far, known colloquially as Wee Park.
Not sure if any of this helps, but thought I'd contribute as it's very close to where I live.

There is an article in last week's Galloway News about the lighthouse, with the findings of local historian being reported to the local history society.  There is mention in the article of a tender being accepted from Robert Hume of Gatehouse; 'certainly there is evidence that brickwork in the lighthouse matches bricks produced by Hume in Gatehouse'.

I have an inkling you know about the article though?  8)

The Lighter Side / Re: So where are you from?

Born in Clapham, moved to Galloway when I was 6.  After school, travelled around to college/university/working, met my now ex-husband in the Outer Hebrides and moved south to Dorset for 27 years. Never settled, never felt accepted, told I was too wild and feisty lol
Divorced in 2014, and have come home to the village I was brought up in - can see my old house from the bottom of my garden  :)
Grandparents on one side were Scottish,  and moved about due to the nature of their work - shepherds, agricultural labourers, domestic service, gardeners - ancestors as far north as Rannoch Moor, Applecross, Assynt, as well as Dumfries and Galloway.  Other side were Cornish and Irish, settled in Woolwich, London eventually, via India where my father was born.
I never gave up hope I'd get back here one day - I'm from Scotland, although I wasn't born here. It's my home, it's where my heart is; feisty Celt  ;)
