Further to my thank you post, looking at the Morden marriage of John and Sarah, if you go back a page in the registry you'll note that a William Newman, widower, is married. John Melmoth's mother was Amelia Newman... perhaps this is her brother... or maybe just a coincidence... the plot thickens!

Wow, thanks BumbleB and LizzieL for your input to this!

Yes, Thomas Melmoth did marry Amelia Newman had had a few children including George and Henry but hadn't considered John as the father of Rachel. I've seen Melmoth written as Melmer so Melmur doesn't surprise me at all! In fact, the family here in Australia became the Melmouths, I guess due to the Dorset accent...

So as I see it, my gx3 grandmother Marianne Melmoth is a cousin of Sarah Allen and both are cousins of Rachel Hayward, all having as their grandparents Thomas Melmoth and Amelia Newman. That makes Sarah and Rachel my first cousins, 5 times removed...

Thanks once again, it's been quite a productive post,

Cheers,
Mario

Dorset / Rachel Hayward nee Melmoth, born circa 1803
« on: Thursday 18 April 19 23:27 BST (UK)  »
Hi everyone,

I'm trying to determine the parents of Rachel Melmoth who was born around 1803. According to the 1841 and 1851 censuses, together with her marriage details to John Hayward (marriage in Stourpaine 1823) she was born in Durweston, just across the Stour River from Stourpaine.

It seems that she was very close to Sarah Melmoth who married John Allen in 1820, also in Stourpaine. Sarah was baptised on 8 February of 1795 to George and Sarah Melmoth. There is another daughter baptised to George and Sarah on April 14 1799 but I can't make out the child's name.

I'm working on the theory that Rachel's parents were also George and Sarah on the basis that the two married couples mentioned previously (John & Sarah Allen and John & Rachel Hayward) appear as witnesses on their respective marriage documents. They also lived two doors from each other in Stourpaine on the 1841 census...

My gx3 grandmother Marianne Melmoth, born 1803 to Henry and Christiana Melmoth in Durweston, is definitively a first cousin to Sarah but I'm trying to firm up the relationship to Rachel, so any help would be gratefully accepted!

Cheers,
Mario

Dorset / Re: Where was "Turnpike" in Stourpaine...
« on: Monday 29 January 18 07:30 GMT (UK)  »
Helen,

I never took this any further but I'm pretty confident that the turnpike now makes up part of the A350 and is the main road of Shaston Road.

As for the Horlocks, there are quite a few in Pimperne and so it's my gut feel they probably originated from there several generations before my Gx3 grandfather, Thomas Horlock who was born in Stourpaine in 1781.

Thomas lived until the age of 79 so I'm in no doubt that he would've met your husband's forebears at some stage - maybe even shared a drink or two!

Cheers,
Mario

Dorset / Re: Marriage details for James & Eleanor Meaden, Shillingstone circa 1778?

Richard,

It looks like that James was born in Sturminster Marshall not Sturminster Newton. Still in the general area but the other side of Blandford from Shillingstone....

Richard,

Thank you very much for this information. As you say, all I have to do now is try and prove the connection!

Dorset / Durweston registers, pre-1730?
« on: Thursday 02 November 17 20:28 GMT (UK)  »
Hello everyone!

In tracing my family through Dorset I've noticed that there don't seem to be any baptismal, marriage or death records that pre-date 1730 for the parish of Durweston. Familysearch indicate that they don't have these records, nor are they on Ancestry or in the Dorset OPC.

Would anybody know what has happened to these pre-1730 parish registers from Durweston?

Cheers,
Mario

Dorset / Marriage details for James & Eleanor Meaden, Shillingstone circa 1778?
« on: Tuesday 31 October 17 03:00 GMT (UK)  »
Hello everyone!

I've been searching through the parish records in, and round, Shillingstone for marriage details for James & Eleanor Meaden who I strongly suspect are my 5x great grandparents.

I also suspect they were married about 1778 and have seen their surname also written as Meaton in their children's baptismal records.

However, after much exhaustive searching through Ancestry I have not been able to find anything and so turn to this forum for help...

HELP!

If anyone could give me some ideas on how I might track down their marriage details I would be very grateful.

Cheers,
Mario

PS I have their children as follows -
Kitty (I believe aka Christian & my 4x great grandmother) baptised on 27/10/1779 in Shillingstone with a surname of Meaton
James baptised on  20/02/1782 in Shillingstone with a surname of Meaden
Mary & George baptised on 23/03/1783 in Childe Okeford -with a surname of  Meaton
Ann baptised on 04/09/1785 in Ibberton with a surname of  Meaden
James (another one) baptised on 09031788 in Fifehead-Neville with a surname of  Meaden
