Thanks Geoff

On first perusal, these folk don't seem to be 'my' Rowells, but I'll keep the details on file anyway.  Wouldn't be the first time that strays have slotted in at a later date!

Hi
give me a chance ;D
they do seem to be hiding somewhere

peterbennett

Sorry Peter, didn't mean to pressure you - I just thought you'd overlooked them.  Please be assured that I'm extremely grateful for all your efforts.

Thanks for the info you've already provided - it's a great boon to me.

As to John S and James W in 81 or 01, I have them both in 81 at "Glassmoor,   Census Place Whittlesey St Mary & St Andrew, Cambridge" (John is mis-transcribed as John Hempson Rowell - and James' birthplace I've just noticed is given as Pondersbridge, Cambridge ). In 1901, John has disappeared, but James is at Blackbush Drove, Whittlesey.

As to Flora/Florrie, she became Mrs Jabez Rowell (my G Grandmother) in 1899. I have her in 1901, after her marriage to Jabez, but can't find her anywhere prior to that when she was Miss Clarke.  All I know about her is her age (as above) and that on their marriage cert, her father is named as James Clarke, profession Miller.  I always knew she'd be difficult and am not too worried at present -I'll re-visit her line and buy her birth cert when I grind to a halt on my present research!

Thanks Peter - that's great.

Was there no sign of John, James or (doubt this one anyway) Flora?

Thanks again - another piece of jigsaw!

Hi

I'd be extremely grateful if someone could check out the following people for me on the 91 census:

John Stimpson Rowell Age 46 born Benwick, Cambs
James Wilden Rowell Age 22 born Benwick, Cambs

James is John's son, but is of course of an age that he may have flown the nest - hence the request

Also, on the same basis:

William Rowell Age 43 born Benwick, Cambs
Jabez Rowell Age 18 born Benwick, Cambs
George William Rowell 21 born Benwick, Cambs

Finally, and this is a long shot:

Flora (or Florrie) Cathline Clarke Age 20 born Norfolk(?).  If she's still at home, her father is James Clark, but no other details known.

If any of the above can be traced, I'd be very grateful if possible, for an image of the relevant census pages.

Thanks in anticipation.

Gareth

Ah well.  Back to the drawing board! ???

If everything else tied up, I could have lived with Maria/Martha - it's not too far away and could have been a mis-transcription, but with only 1 out of 6 kids.... It's obviously not 'my' James - where the heck did he go?!!!!

Thanks again for your efforts anyway Chris.

Chris

Thanks for your efforts.

Could I presume on you to check again for James in Derbyshire, but this time with Huntingdonshire as birthplace?  My ancestors were scattered around both counties and I have documents for many which I know to be correct, but their place/.county of birth flits between the twp depending on the document that's being looked at!

Would someone be so kind as to look on the 91 census for James Rowell, age 42, born in Benwick Cambridgeshire.

In the 81 census he had moved from Benwick to Ault Hucknall Derbyshire.  His family in 81 (with their ages BY 91)were wife Maria (41), Mary Ann (16), William (14), Elizabeth (12) and Harriet (11).

Thanks again Peter.

I agree 100% with you re waiting.  Just thought that, since you were kind enough to look for me, I could prevail on you to cross check for me to narrow down avenues!

And BTW, the CWGC doesn't have his parents as next of kin as such.  His memorial on the Roll of Honour actually reads 'Son of John and Rose Hannah Livett; husband of Jessie Richardson (formerly Livett)....'

Thanks Peter

I now await his birth certificate to confirm this is the right John.  I assume he is the only John Livett of about the right age?

I wonder if you'd be kind enough to cross-check for me if there is a Rose or Rose Hannah Livett anywhere else as I am a bit bemused as to why the War Graves Commission have his mother as Rose Hannah?

If this is the right John though, then the poor soul seems to have been blighted.  First the workhouse before a hard life as an Ag Lab (1901 census gleans this), then married and off to war leaving behind a pregnant wife (my grandmother).  Given the timing, I doubt he ever even knew she was expectinga child.  He was then killed, leaving my grandmother to bring up their daughter alone.  Then at the age of 5, the daughter he left behind also died from diptheria.  What a tragic tale.
