Down / Men who built the Mourne Wall
« on: Friday 03 February 17 16:55 GMT (UK)  »
Hi All,
This is maybe a bit off topic, but I feel it still sits within family history in Co.Down, particularly the Mournes area.

I do not live in Co.Down, but I am regular visitor to the Mournes with a passion for climbing in the Mournes and its history. I feel that there is not enough coverage or information surrounding the men who built the Mourne Wall. I am sure there are magnificent stories during the building of the wall between 1904 and 1922, I would like to research the builders and if enough informatuon is obtained, put this into a website to allow more lovers of the Mourne Mountains to freely access.

Please get in touch if you have any photos, stories, documents etc which can be pulled together in one place to give an understanding of the hardwork and skills was required from these men to build the Mournes Wall. You may be a family relative, or know some information on the topic, any discussion is welcome.

Thanks,

In the 1901 Census the name is spelt "McNicholl" opposed to "McNickle".

Would this be a differnet person?

I have Patrick as a possible brother in my notes.  Looks like this is Mary McNickle....

Is there much more information on RootsIreland?  Would it be beneficial to pay the subscription?

Thats might be her, the spelling of the surname varies.  I was given an address of Farkland, Muldonagh, Claudy.

How were you able to find that information?

My information was that she was from the Claudy area.  I am not sure on the exact area where she was born.  However I am aware that the McNicholl familiy mainly lived in Claudy and owned businesses in the area.  So I imagine that it would have been closer.

It is possible that she was born after 1921, however from the information I have found it would only be a difference of one or two years.

Hi All,

I am looking for information on a Mary McNicholl born in Claudy around 1920.  I know Mary also went by the name of 'Minnie' and attended St St Peter's & St Paul's Catholic Church.

Lived close to the church (possibly Foreglen) however worked in Portstewart for a number of years.

It would be great if I could get more information on Mary.
