Berkenhaught shared a common ancestor with some of my cousins.    He was born 24.12.1828 and was christened/baptised twice, once in Ripon (birth place) and in the Salen Chapel, Highgate, the latter 19.11.1829.    From c1837 to 1847 the family lived in Germany then Austria during which time Berkenhaught disappeared from the family.     He may have died or stayed in Europe but I have no idea which.    His parents were Samuel Hirst (1801-1882) and Ann Mary née Daville(b1808).

I have heard worse suggestions but there is no family tradition, nor is it mentioned in his obituary/eulogy.     Not withstanding, thanks for the suggestion   BAL

I am not sure who is going to receive this reply so I will write as if to all.     JW. was born 21.08.1843, married Christina McKenzie 15.10.1874 and they had 13 children - 4 girls etc.     He died in Cullen 05.05.1918 and had been a fish curer selling inter alia, salted herring in barrels to Russia.    Cullen is located on the north facing Moray Firth coast midway between Banff and Buckie and is indeed where Cullen Skink (smoked haddock soup) comes from.     In answer to one query, I have trace of him in all census returns except 1901 but his wife and 9 children were at home - hence the mystery.

Banffshire / James Wood of Cullen 1843-1918

James Wood was my wife's grandfather and appeared in all Census returns from 1851 to 1911 except for 1901.    His wife was described as Head of House that year so I am hoping that there may be somebody who knows what happened to him at that time.     With my thanks   BAK

James Wood - grandfather to my wife seems to have disappeared in 1901, being not found in the Census but reappeared in 1911.     Any trace of him would be appreciated

Heather, thanks very much for that.    I have been well served by yourself and others and it has been good.    My wife was a bit rude about her uncle Murdo and his lack of a sense of humour when I told her about the reference to his probity.    She had been evacuated from Glasgow to Cullen for a year during WW-2 and and met him thus quite often although uncle David was the one permanent Wood resident at that time.      I met his widow once.
Whatever thanks again and best wishes

Brian
