I have had this same thought many times! It would be very eye opening if you could actually do that but so far I haven't found a way either. One thing I remember trying was to put the name of the street in the "keyword" box but I don't think that was successful.

I know there have been Beer families of this time period associated with Prussia/Germany. Just another location you can search. If that were the case he may have been originally a Wilhelm (William).

Other snippets of information are:
- Tom may have had a brother called Bob and a sister called Edna

We have proved her memory to be correct in that she did have an Uncle Bob living in the area. She also had an Aunty living in the area as well. Named "Ada", close to Edna?

Death Cert Number: 14087/1955 (BDM VIC)
Name: Ada Matilda SMITH
Death: 1955
Location: Cheltenham, VIC
Father: William SMITH
Mother: Matilda Ann COHEN
Birth: Hobart, Tasmania (This fits with the LINC Tas record as we know she was born in Park St, Hobart in 1876)

From this it shows that she didn't marry.

Marjori seems to have a wonderful memory!

There is a death record in BDM VIC - 10805/1929 for a potential brother.

- Robert Francis SMITH
Death: 1929
Father: William SMITH
Mother: Matilda Ann COHEN
Location: Melbourne East
Age: 45

The age is out by three years from the date listed in LINC Tasmania records but everything else fits.

There is also a possible match on NAA (naa.gov.au) Barcode 60215522

- Robert Francis SMITH
Age: 31
Born: Lilydale TAS (Lilydale is close to Launceston)
Address: East Brunswick Melbourne VIC
Occupation: Bricklayer (Same as his brother)

Another piece to add to your puzzle

I found the same details as majm as well as the death of Hilda May SMITH in 1977, the same year as Tom.

Parents Alexander Ross and Elizabeth Sheldon.

If they were refused a divorce this would explain why Tom and Elsie were unable to marry.

One of the papers also gives the marriage date as the 27th of April 1918.

The only piece of information that might shine more light on things is the divorce file which can be found in the public records office of Victoria. However it isn't digital and may not give any further details about Tom other then what you can see in the newspaper reports.

One last thing  :)
This may not be him but does fit the physical traits of your Peter. He is listed as "Peter Demetrius".

If it was him, he would then have needed to get from NSW and establish himself in SA within a year to fit your dates. Possible that it would explain a name change. Just guessing though.

No problem at all. Hopefully someone will add something new. I did update the last post just to point out that the NSW police gazette calls him "Dominick Demetrius". Possibly a typo.

Good luck.

That was a wonderful amount of information you provided. I haven't been able to find anything new for you but have enjoyed reading about him, people had very kind things to say about his character and choice of lifestyle.
The only thing that I found in regards to his life in Greece came from a poem in the paper with the words "To all I could gather of Grecians and Greece, He'd tell me of Athens and Marathon's plain" http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article138860237

I am sure you have more information about his exact age but there were also reports that he could have been as old as 87. However, living on the water would probably make him look much older then he was.

The only other thing I note is how obscure the information on his name can be. The NSW police gazette refers to them as "Dominick Demetrius" and son "Peter Donnell".

Good luck and hopefully someone will be able to fill in more detail.

Hi Freya,

From the divorce record I can see that he was married in Gateshead-on-Tyne, Durham, ENGLAND and that his first child was born in Manchester, ENGLAND.

Hope this helps.
