Dear Margaret

Whether we are searching for one or two bakers called Alexander Murdoch, he or they are certainly elusive! I have also sent you a personal message through RootsChat so that we can exchange more extensive information on our family histories.

Unfortunately, we are in that awkward Scottish void before 1855 when we have to rely on Old Parish records which do not give a complete picture of Scottish BMD records.

First, let me clear up the question of the two Charles Donaldson Murdoch and Alexander Murdoch’s. I have Colvend OPR records of the baptisms of all four of these people and so I am sure that they all existed. Certainly, the separate careers of the two Alexanders as the mariner drowned in Hull and the baker living in Dalbeattie, is well established and they are both present in the 1841 census.  You mention searching in Dumfries, but the appropriate records are in the Colvend registers and Dumfries was in a separate County until comparatively recently. You also asked about Wendy, who is definitely part of my family tree.

Moving to Charlotte, it is intriguing to note that the transcripts of birth records of three of her five children give the mother’s name as Branette, Barnet(t) and Burnett. Unfortunately, the OPR records for Edinburgh are not complete and the only Charlotte with any of these surnames, born around 1836 and indexed by Scotlands People, is Charlotte Carnegie Burnett who was baptised at Strachan Free Church on 26 July 1836. However, Strachan is near Aberdeen, more than 100 miles from Edinburgh and so this is unlikely to be ‘our’ Charlotte. Amazingly, I cannot find civil birth records for son Charles or daughters Clara & Lena, although Lena might be Emma Ann Murdock, born in Newcastle upon Tyne in 1867 with mother’s name Barnett.  I have found baptism records for Clara, Elizabeth & Charles but not for Alexander or Lena. The family name Rayner does not seem to help either, although this could be the mother’s name of either Charlotte or Alexander the baker.

And so to Alexander the baker. The intriguing connection is that Alexander the baker in Dalbeattie in 1841 and 1851, disappears without trace in Scotland after that. The same or another Alexander the baker, born in Scotland, appears in Marylebone, Middlesex, married to Charlotte from Edinburgh and with 2 children, in 1861. This would seem to be a perfect match, apart from the recorded ages. Alexander’s birth/baptism record in the Colvend OPR is dated 9 September 1830, which ties in with his ages of 11 and 20 in the census records. Alexander in Marylebone in 1861 is recorded as 25 which would give a date of birth of 1835/6. However, it should also be noted that the ages of Charlotte in the 1861 & 1871 census records seem to be inconsistent at 28 and 32 when later evidence suggests that they should have been around 25 and 35, so we could still have a match. Not surprisingly, there are a number of Alexander Murdochs in the OPR records in Scotlands People and there will be more who are not in the extant OPRs. 1830 (6), 1831 (3), 1832 (1), 1833 (2), 1834 (2), 1835 (4) & !836 (0). None of these show a maternal connection with Rayner! The frustrating thing is that Alexander only appears in the Marylebone records once (1861) and so there is no further information to be had on his age or his town of birth. Also, it has been impossible to trace any information on a marriage of Alexander & Charlotte in England or Scotland between 1851 & 1861.

At the end of the day, I think I have taken at least part of a step forward and this new line offers some hope of finding a trigger to unlock the enigma. It still remains a mystery how so many BMD records for this little group of people just seem to be completely missing.

Best wishes, John Murdoch

I have just seen your post of three weeks ago and I am a member of the Murdoch family of Dalbeattie. I can also confirm that, like you, I have struggled with Alexander Murdoch, the baker, who just seems to vanish into thin air.

Ebenezer Murdoch (1761-1806) and his wife Grissel Riddick (1761-1834) had two sons. These were Samuel Lowden Murdoch (1784-1858), a master shoemaker who, with his wife, Jane Young (1787-1879) had 11 children, including the two youngest: Alexander Murdoch (1827-1868), a mariner who drowned in Hull Docks; and Charles Donaldson Murdoch (1829-1860), a  master mariner who died at sea as Master of the brig Irongray which was lost on a voyage from Matanzas, Cuba to Great Britain at the end of 1860.

The second son of Ebenezer was Alexander Murdoch (1795/6-1830), who was also a master mariner. I have not been able to find any information about his death, but maybe he succumbed to the flu epidemic of 1830. He married Ann Copeland (or Copland or Coupland), the daughter of William Copeland, Merchant of Dalbeattie, in Edinburgh on 16 September 1822 and they had two children in Colvend with the same names as Samuel’s two youngest children, above. Charles Donaldson Murdoch was born in 1826. I have been unable to trace anything further about him and I presume that he died in infancy. This would fit with Samuel choosing the same name for his youngest son who was born three years later. Charles Donaldson was the well-respected miller and farmer of Barcloy Mill at Colvend and Samuel and his family lived at the Mill Cottage, which may have been owned by Charles Donaldson. When Charles Donaldson (the miller) died in in 1855, Samuel Murdoch was the informant and was present at the death.

And so to Alexander’s youngest son, yet another Alexander, who was born in 1830, four months after the death of his father. It is this Alexander who became a baker. In 1841, he was aged 11 and living with his mother and Margaret Gilson in Dalbeattie. In 1851, his mother Anne, was a pauper, mariner’s widow, born Edinburgh and living in Dumfries Road, Dalbeattie with her son, Alexander, 20, a journeyman baker. Here the trail goes cold and I have been unable to trace anything about Alexander Murdoch, the baker, or his mother, after 1851.

Unfortunately, this does not seem to throw much light onto your problem with Alexander Murdoch, the baker, born in Scotland about 1835. The discrepancy in date of birth between 1830 and 1835 does not necessarily rule out the possibility that these are one and the same person and it would partly answer my problem with the disappearance of ‘my’ Alexander from all Scottish records. I will try and research a bit more about the background of your ’Alexander’ to see if it throws up any other data to prove or disprove the possibility of a connection.

In a later post, you mention the Alexander Murdoch who drowned in Hull Docks . He was indeed married, to Isabella Dempster of Dunscore, Dumfries and they married in Bristol on 27 November 1859. They had two sons, Samuel Murdoch and William Dempster Murdoch. Following the rather unfortunate circumstances behind the death of Alexander, which you will be aware of from the coroner’s report, Isabella started a new life with her children in Guernsey. If you search Under Murdoch in Rootschat, you will see a post from me which outlines the development of that family which became prominent in Guernsey. I was seeking information on more recent events in that family, which I suspect may have died out last century. Although the post has had nearly 1000 hits, I only received one reply!

Let us hope that we can find find a new clue to resolve our joint quest to trace more information on an Alexander Murdoch, a baker, born in Scotland between 1830 and 1835. It would be great if we are looking for the same man, but equally intriguing if there turns out to be two of them.

Hi Stewart

Thanks for the link. The family came from Dalbeattie in Kirkcudbrightshire and that was the name of his mother's house in Grange Road, St Peter Port (1923 & 1927 Kelly's). Previously, the family home was at 7 Saumerez Street, St Peter Port and so that house must also have been called "Dalbeattie".

The travel records also show Isabella Florence Murdoch on another trip to Jersey. Florence was his mother's name and so this is almost certainly his sister, who I had only identified thus far as Isabella J F.  This therefore fills another gap in my knowledge. Thanks again for your help.

Can anyone with local knowledge or access to Guernsey records help discover what happened to a small branch of my family who moved to Guernsey in the 1870s? Isabella Murdoch neé Dempster moved from Dalbeattie with her two sons, Samuel and William Dempster Murdoch. I have been able to discover the following from on-line sources:

− Samuel died on 14 Feb 1885 at the age of 24.
− Isabella died on 10 July 1890 at the age of 66.
− William Dempster Murdoch married Florence Elizabeth Cluett on 6 August 1891 and they had two children:
William Dempster Cluett Murdoch, born St Peter Port 12 Oct 1892, died 1919 aged 26 or 27.
Isabella J F Murdoch, born St Peter Port in 1894 or 1895.
− William Dempster Murdoch died in 1921 after a very successful career in both business (W D Murdoch, provision merchants and later, Murdoch’s Stores Limited) and in politics (President of the Chamber of Commerce until 1900, a douzenier from 1900, constable of St Peter Port from 1908 until at least 1918, etc etc). There is an obituary in the Guernsey Weekly Press of 23 April 1921 but, unfortunately, I do not have access to this.
− Florence Elizabeth Murdoch neé Cluett, born St Peter Port 11 Aug 1869. She was still living at “Dalbeattie”, Grange Road , St Peter Port in 1927.

Any BMD or other information on the family, particularly the causes of the early deaths of Samuel and WDC Murdoch; possible marriages and children of Samuel, WDC and Isabella J F Murdoch; and the obituary of WD Murdoch would be most welcome.

Yes. I spent over two hours searching Help and FAQs. The guidance said nothing about needing to have made three posts before it would work. Similarly, your advice to redringlets on 2 March 2017 did not mention it either. Clearly, I was aware of this advice as it is in this string, but the Forum Profile option was just not there until I had made the extra posts. The very helpful response from Mazi solved the problem.

Eureka.

Thanks once again for solving my problem.

And here is the third post.

If it works - great. if not, I guess I can live without displaying my research interests.

Many thanks for your help.

Thanks Mike.
This is my second post to se if it works.
Strange that there are no guidance notes to help with this.

I have the same problem but the solution does not seem to work. the only options I get on "Modify Profile" are Account Settings and Ignore Topics Options. Where can I find the Forum Profile page?
