Canada / John Mcdonald
« on: Sunday 07 July 19 16:30 BST (UK)  »
Seeking information regarding my relative John Mcdonald, a crofter/ farmer and son of Alexander Mcdonald and Catherine Nicholson. He went to Canada following the birth of his daughter in England in 1904 and I believe he died not long after moving to Canada. From what I gather, he was buried in Calgary, however all attempts to find anything about his death have failed so far. What I know about John, is that he was born on the 1st of December 1868 in Duirinish, Inverness, Scotland and lived on the Isle of Rum in his younger years. He and Elizabeth Heywood, who was from a wealthy English family, had a daughter called Elizabeth, in 1904. The Heywood family disliked their union because she was rich and he was poor. They refused to let him see his daughter, so, heartbroken, he moved to Canada. There are rumours in the family that he may have married again, but again, I have struggled in finding out this information. He may have died around 1907, but not confirmed. Can anybody help? It would be greatly appreciated.

Hi

Civilrecords at irishgenealogy.ie shows the Death of an Ellen Kells age 78 in Clones in 1865.  This lady was born too early to be your Ellen...... but could it be her Mother?

Regards

I had a look at this but I'm not sure.

Hi

Griffiths Valuation - Monaghan survey completed in 1861 - lists an Abraham Kells in Killeevan Parish, Clones Union, Co Monaghan.  Landlord Lord Cremorne.  See below:-

Thank you for this! I believe they were Presbyterian.

Do you know what religion your family were?

Seeking information regarding Ellen Kells, who was born in Monaghan in 1833. All I know is that her father's name was Abraham, who may have been involved in petty crime. I sadly do not know the name of her mother and I don't know how to go about finding that information.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Lauren,

Many thanks for responding and explaining your connection. I’ve since established that James Welsh and Annie Semple Harrison had a daughter, Isabella Boyd Welsh, in 1911. She went on to marry a Joseph Boon Cantley and they had four children. I’ll private message you with my email address. Let me know If you would like me to send you the little I have on your Harrison/Boyd side and my Welsh side.

Thanks again for making contact.

All the best,

David

Hi David,
Thank you very much! I have replied to your email  :)

Kind regards,
Lauren

My grandmother's brother, James Welsh b1885 married Annie Semple Harrison b1886 in Glasgow in 1908. James died in Harrow, Middlesex in 1973 and Annie in Brent, Greater London in 1976. It is unclear when they moved south, and if they had any offspring. Up to mid 1915 it is not believed they had any children. In 1932, James was living in Glasgow as he was the informant of his brother's death.

Any help appreciated!

David

Hello David,
I'm afraid I don't know whether they had children either, however it appears we are distant relatives! Annie Semple Harrison is my 3x great aunt - her sister, Isabella Boyd Harrison is my 2x great grandmother!  :) Would love to hear more about the Welsh side!

Kind regards,
Lauren

South Africa / Re: George Alan Orton
« on: Wednesday 07 March 18 20:07 GMT (UK)  »

Is there a chance that he returned to the UK and lived a long life? There is a death for a George Alan Orton on 06 January 2014 amongst the probates (registry Oxford).

A bit more of a guess:
A George A Orton marries Sheila B Harriss in 1967 (reg: Sutton, Greater London).
A possible Sheila Bailey Orton (b 11 Jan 1932) dies in 1992 (reg: Birmingham, Warwickshire, https://probatesearch.service.gov.uk/Calendar/GetImgSrc?filePath=%2F1992%2FO%2F006439_orsler_1992.Png)

Sylvia

It is possible. Nancy was born in 1925 and is still going, so I wouldn't rule it out :-)

John H Forsyth / Clara J M Phipps , marriage Dover 1945 ?

ev

Quite possibly. Perhaps the J is for Joan and she was known by her middle name. Not uncommon in the family.
