Hi
Not an easy one:

John Martinson (Jan Mortensen) Birth 1 Aug 1903 in Tretten Parish. Jonetta was living at Galtrudhaugen. So now we know where that name came from:

Parents: Morten Hansen and Jonetta Iversdatter

John and family in the 1910 Census in Lillehammer now living with an Elias Olsen:

Wow! You are amazing! I can't thank you enough, I was stuck at a major dead end and you've provided me with SO much information! This makes so much sense as to why there was so much confusion between the names on the two records. Its going to be a busy afternoon now!

I'm trying to decipher the names of my great grandfathers parents. Here some background info that might help fresh eyes.

My great grandfather was named John Martinson. He was born in Lillehammer in 1903. Im unsure if John was his given name at birth or if he changed it to something more English upon arrival to Canada(before 1928). Im also not sure if his parents came to Canada with him. The screenshot Iv'e provided is from his marriage record. Due to Norwegian naming practice, him and his father do not have the same surname.

His fathers first name is presumably Martin, as it looks to be written that way, and Martinson was my great grandfathers surname. That being said, I have been completely unsuccessful at coming up with a plausible Norwegian surname. I just know it starts with a "H". Iv'e stared at this record so long it's giving me a migraine!  ??? ;)

His mothers name looks to be written as Jonetta Everson Galtrud Houg(spelling?). I know Jonetta is a Norwegian name, and my great grandfathers death record states his mother as Janet Galtrud which makes sense, but once again both variations seem to come up empty?

I haven't been able to find ANYTHING about either of them..
His death record states his parents names as Elias Martinson and Janet Galtrud, however I believe both of these are anglicized names, and haven't been at all useful in finding information.

note: the two dips/loops that come down into the fathers name are from the word January written above.

Lancashire / Trying to find Martin Kennedys parents

I'm trying to find my great grandfathers parents.

My great grandfather Martin Kennedy married Mary Jane Noon in Liverpool in 1924(Jan-Mar). I found them in the index on FreeBMD, but that obviously doesn't hint towards his parents were. They had 7 children between 1925 and 1935.

Ancestry seems to be coming up with nothing for me. After researching my family for a couple months now, I'm beyond surprised to see how hard the information from England has been to access! In your opinion, is Find My Past worth having a membership to as well?

Does the cert. name her husband(s), Osprey?

The Bryce Crawford connection would certainly help to explain Bryce Nicol's first name. ( I also think the first name Harvey could be explained by this birth in Gargunnock, Stirlingshire, 9 July 1820- David Nicol  with parents Andrew Nicol and Janet Harvie).

Court 389, did your Agnes Kilgour marry John McFarlane in 1860? If so I note that among their children are Jemima and Bryce McFarlane. Coincidence?

Re Bryce Nicol  it would appear that he married a Maria Kilgour. Maria was born in Gloucestershire but her parents James Kilgour and Elizabeth Woodward were born in St Quivox, James being the son of John Kilgour who farmed at Notmyre. Again coincidence?

William
My fourth great grandmother Agnes Crawford married James Kilgour in 1834. They had 3 children, Janet, Agnes and Jemima(unsure of last one) before 1843. I'm unsure if they divorced or if he passed away, but between then and 1849 she married and gave birth to Bryce with David Nicol.

My 3rd great grand mother Agnes Kilgour married John Macfarlane in 1860 and had a whole bunch of children, including a Bryce and a Jemima. Unfortunately John Macfarlane disappears somewhere between 1871 and 1881..

On the case of Bryce Nicol marrying a Kilgour.. do you think it's possible the James and Agnes divorced, and James remarried and had more children... subsequently one that would marry his ex-wives son? I'm going to need to pour a glass of wine for this one..

Free index to the 1939 Register has in Liverpool
Martin Kennedy, born 1895
living with
Mary (J) Kennedy
and 2 more people + 1 closed person

Further tinkering reveals
Mary (J) was born 1895
other two whose records are open are
Elizabeth Kennedy, born 1927, later name "Tuder"
Francis Kennedy, born 1935

GRO birth index shows Elizabeth and Francis birth registrations, mother Noon
We cannot do lookups in the 39 Register.
John

My dad mentioned something about "lots of siblings" but I only knew for sure about the twin sister.

A possiblility
Marriage, March 1924 Liverpool  8b 167
Martin Kennedy (or Martin Kerr) + Mary J. Noon

Then Dec 1930 births in Liverpool
Kennedy mmn Noon
8b 58 Catherine J.
and
8b 59 Joan T.

This has to be it. I just found a death record for Joan Teresa Proudfoot(her name after marriage) and it lists the birth date as October 1 1930. Im on the right track now!

Welcome to Rootschat

The only one born in 1935 is this one

Births Jun 1935
KENNEDY    Josephine M   mmn  McGowan
Manchester N    8d   524

That doesn't fit with a 1st October birth though, and there were no other children with mother McGowan born then.

Did the twin survive and do you know her name (only tell us this if you know that she is no longer alive) ?

So I was totally wrong about her first name to begin with. Her first name was Catherine but she went by Josephine. Her twin sister was named Joan.

Can I check - did she marry Ian G MacFarlane in England or Canada?

He was born in New Westminster, BC so they would've married after she moved to Canada.

Apparently I might be wrong about this. Her first name was actually Catherine and she went by her middle name Josephine.
