Wigtownshire / Re: McLellan, McLelland, McClellan, McLelland, MacLellan etc. etc.
« on: Saturday 09 July 22 13:01 BST (UK)  »
This old thread might well be "dead" by now but I'm adding my tuppenceworth as I have a direct interest in this McClelland line. The Samuel McClelland mentioned here is brother to my 2nd great grandfather Andrew. Their father is the slightly problematic Samuel/John married to Roseanna etc. Donnan. Potential alternate spellings are a nightmare. Here is my comment relating to Andrew's record in my Ancestry tree. This will either help, hinder or drift in the ether: -

"My 2nd great grandfather. The records are not entirely conclusive. The OPR birth/baptism record for 1806 in New Luce indicates his parents as Samuel Clellan and Rosannah Dannan. His statutory death record gives John McClelland and Roseanna Donnan as parents and a possible birth year (working back from given age) of 1808. Census records offer very varied estimated birth years from 1804-1816 but consistently give his birth place as New Luce. Samuel Clellan vs. John McClelland does not present a straight forward reconciliation. Rosannah Dannan vs. Roseanna Donnan seems a bit easier to reconcile. On balance, I consider that this record is probably an accurate picture and consider it complete."

Moray (Elginshire) / Re: Alexander Sutherland and Elizabeth Waite in Drainie

Hi pandacub,
I haven't found any references to a Katherin (or variants) so far. I only have children for Alexander: Alexander (b.1780); David (b.1782); James (b.1784); Isobell/Isabella (b.1787); and George (b.1789).

Thanks for these suggestions Annie. You are correct on the baptism date. I get what you say about no child named Alexander, though Isabella did have a brother with that name. And, yes I come across the spelling thing a lot in my tree. I always search under Waite, White and Whyte for this reason.

Hi Annie - Her birth was registered in Drainie Parish, with her father Alexander living in what looks like "Billermie" (poss. phonetic Balormie). On the birth/baptism record her mother is quite clearly "Eliz. Waite". On the death record, it looks like "Elizabeth Whaite", but the "i" seems to have a long tail, and a case could be made for it being "Whyte". The informant was her daughter Margaret. Her first name is recorded with spellings Isobell at birth, Isobel on marriage, and Isabella at death.
David.

Moray (Elginshire) / Alexander Sutherland and Elizabeth Waite in Drainie

I am looking for any info or clues re my 4th great grandparents, Alexander Sutherland and Elizabeth Waite (maybe White). I have the birth, marriage and death records for their daughter, my 3rd great grandmother, Isobell (or Isabella). She married James Stevenson, a seaman from Fife, in Lossiemouth in 1813 and moved with him to Limekilns/Dunfermline where their 7 children (Elizabeth, Helen, James, William, John, David and Margaret) were born between 1814 and 1828. She died there in 1872. I have nothing on Alexander other than that he was a farmer, according to Isobell's death record. Any help gratefully received. Regards, David Milroy.

Ireland / Re: Miskelly from Ireland to Scotland 1850s

They both died in Newton Stewart, Penninghame, Wigtownshire, in 1896, David first and Mary 8 months later. In both cases their daughter Ellen (Helen) was the informant.
The plot thickens, with Elizabeth being Maryanne's illegitimate daughter, with no father given, as informed by Maryann.
I've been trying to map out all the information so far, but I'm getting confused around the widowed Agnes Kelly who would have been born around 1797 and the Agnes who married to John Kelly (possibly David's brother). Agnes and Maryann both feasibly could be Agnes Kelly (Murray)'s daughters but there would probably be too big a gap between David's (c.1820) and John's (c.1800) births. It's getting late... - David

Rodie - Kelly marriage is only partly helpful. Confirms both were resident Old Luce/ New Luce and that Agnes was 21 which fits an 1843ish birth, but gives her parents as John Kelly (could be OK) and Agnes Murray, which only works if David has a brother called John who also moved from Ireland with a daughter Agnes! Possible.

There's an Elizabeth Kelly born 1865 in Old Luce who would fit.
