Hi,
I have just made contact with a relative of mine, whose mother is my grandfather's half-sister, i.e. our common ancestor is my great grandmother. My grandfather also had a brother, named Leo, his birth records are as follows:

Name:   Leo J Williams
Registration Date:   Jul 1921
[Aug 1921]
[Sep 1921]
Registration Quarter:   Jul-Aug-Sep
Registration district:   Christchurch
Inferred County:   Hampshire
Mother's Maiden Name:   Ambrose
Volume Number:   2b
Page Number:   1172

The person who I have made contact with has said that the brother (Leo) was "Killed in Africa fighting with the British." He was born in 1921, So I imagine his death probably occurred between 1939-1961(purely based on the conscription age). I was just posting on here because I cannot find any relevant records and wanted to know if anyone knew about any military action that went on in Africa during this time/ where I could find death records for it. The dates line up with WW2, so perhaps it was something linked with that, but I am not sure.

Any help is appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I still did it George, and even though they could not give me details of my Aunt they could tell me that my Grandfather had not been in their care and a note would be added to my Aunts file concerning my request, through Rootschat her daughter fond me so never give up hope of finding Leo
My Grandfather was taken to the work house by the NSPCC,so you may want to look down every avenue including newspapers of the time for his mother's where abouts

I have filled out the Barnado's form requesting more information about my Grandfathers childhood, I am hoping they do a similar thing for me and add a note to Leos and Ninettes record. Either way, I will look into workhouses and newspapers as you have suggested. Thanks again for your help.

No George you will have to find out what childrens homes were close to where he lived firstly,my own Grandfather went into the workhouse as such so you could try the local archives for the area first,go forward a few years after his birth, and also seaarch for his mother in the records there may be some good information in there, also have you checked out he wasn't taken by another family member ,these tend not to on the internet,Barnardo's charge a small fee for doing a search but they are very thorough and if he went there you will get a lot of information good luck it took me years to find my Grandfathers sister, but it was worth the effort to find our missing family members

Thanks for your help, I am currently attempting to do a search through Barnardos. However, when going on Barnados I am greeted by the following description:

"Search for a relative from the UK.
Are you the nearest surviving direct descendant?

If not you will need to download the postal form for completion by the nearest surviving relative. Alternatively, they can complete the online application themselves.

By completing this form you are declaring that you are the nearest surviving descendant and will be required to pay an initial search fee of £25."

I was wondering if there is a different searching system that perhaps you used. Just that I am not a descendant of the person I am looking for and definitely don't know if I am the closest relative.

Have you contacted the local authorties to see if there are any care records for Leo,even if he wasn't officially adopted he may have been taken into a home prior to him being placed with a new family
I have not tried this, Will it be as simple as calling someone up? if so I may try this afternoon

Have you left a postem on his free bmd entry with your email address, so that if anyone who knows him came looking they could contact you?

Added:
Is Roderick A, born Southampton 1917, related?  (Ninette also born Southampton in 1923?  Leo was from Christchurch so are they the same family?)
I will do that now :)

Yes that is the correct birth for Ninette, I also found Roderick, but upon ordering the birth certificate realised he was not part of the same family.

Thanks, I'll have a look for people with the same birthday. What website did you use to search for this? I am using ancestry and it seems that when I type the birthdate into the search it doesn't just bring up people with that birthdate.
