It would certainly fit, being the same parish he married in and in which his possible children were baptised, and prior to Charlotte's remarriage. An easy mistranscription from Mersey too.
What a sad marriage for Charlotte if so, with both Mary Anns presumably dead and then her husband.

John was recorded as being in the 95th in 1817, at the time of his daughter's baptism, although he may have been a civilian again by then. So he may have been in the old 95th or the new. He certainly had another trade by 1820 when another daughter was born.

Yes, MaxD's help has been brilliant, confirming that the Joseph in the earlier military records is highly likely to be my Joseph, because of that regiment's service in Jamaica at the time of Samuel's birth. That does suggest that Samuel's mother is not Charlotte, but that Joseph married her on his return home and began a new family with her. I wonder whether Joseph's first marriage might even have taken place in Jamaica or at an earlier posting and not in his home county at all ?

Thanks again MaxD. No, unfortunately I don't think he was serving by the time he died but I thought army records might possibly record his wife and children as dependents while he was serving. As you say though, that would be expecting a lot from the records that survive. I'm continuing to look in Nottinghamshire (where he was married) and nearby Lincolnshire for his death. The spelling of his surname varies quite widely.

Thank you so much for that. It looks like this might be the correct Joseph then.

I am trying to discover any information available on John Mersey/Mercer of the 95th Regiment of Foot. He was recorded as being in this regiment in 1817 on his daughter's baptism record and I believe his wife was Charlotte Pine/Pyne who he married in Nottingham that same year. I believe she remarried in 1832 so would particularly like to find out how and when John died.
Thank you for any help you can offer.

I wonder if anyone could tell me where the 22nd Regiment of Foot, 1st Battalion, was serving around 1829/30 please ?
I am trying to find out if the Joseph Leaning who was stationed on the Isle of Bourbon (1812/13) and Mauritius (1815) might have been stationed in Jamaica or Bermuda around 1829/30.
My 2 x great grandfather Samuel Leaning listed Jamaica and Bermuda as his birthplace on censuses, and his father Joseph was recorded as being a soldier.
It's possible that his father may have been in a completely different regiment but this is the only lead that I have. Thank you for any help you can offer.

I came across that information but there was nothing to identify the age or place of birth of that particular Joseph Leaning, so I haven't added it to my Joseph's record. Had I found him serving in the West Indies at the time of Samuel's birth though, it would have been too much of a coincidence to ignore. Thank you for passing it on.
