Hi Richard,

I haven't yet identified the owners of Rome Farm.  The Parkers were tenant farmers there for over 100 years until 1906, when they were given notice to quit.  It may be that the farm was either sold at that point or started to be farmed by the owner's family, although I haven't any further information yet.

Hello all,

I've been transcribing and trying to translate two probate documents written in Latin from the early 1700s.  The transcription part has been reasonably ok, but having struggled with a copy of Denis Stuart's Latin for Local & Family Historians, I'm finally having to admit defeat with the translation!  I've managed to get the gist of the documents, but a 'proper' translation eludes me.

Could any of you kind souls help me, either with a translation of the documents, or by suggesting further resources I could look at?

Hello all,

I've just switched genealogy software (from PhpGedView to RootsMagic, if anyone's interested  ), and consequently have been spending a fair bit of time tidying up sources and so forth.  The whole process has got me thinking about place names, and how they're recorded in the case where county boundaries have shifted. 

At the moment, I record places as they were at the time of the event in question, but this results in a lot of duplicates (e.g. I have 'Settle, West Riding, Yorkshire' pre-1974, and 'Settle, North Yorkshire' post-1974), and it's not obvious that they're actually the same place unless it's an area you know.  I'd be interested to hear how the rest of you go about it.

Evening all,

I've been using PhpGedView for years, but for various reasons will lose access to a web server in a few weeks time (which is possibly no bad thing, as I was starting to get frustrated with how slow PGV is). 

Which (non-web server based) programmes would you recommend for someone migrating from PGV - free or otherwise?  I really like the feel and event handling (and particularly the way in which media are attached to events) in PGV, and I've found the couple of trial programmes I've tried so far (including Family Historian) really clunky by comparison - but that might just be because I haven't spent long enough with them.

I've only just found your post (I haven't checked my email for quite a while - oops!).  Thanks ever so much for the information about Joseph's marriage - it was a lovely surprise.
