Hello Carol,
It is lovely to hear from you and Samantha and the reason you didn't see us last week was that we weren't getting anywhere in that direction - but well another - on Mum's side, we have. We have found Mum's family in Ohio, Cleveland and it is a revelation for us - and for them. I will explain more when we see you, which we will. It is very exciting as Mum's Grandmother was widowed when young. She remarried and with her new husband, took her youngest daughters and moved to America. My Grandma could not go as she was older and married. Anyway, with regard to Charles William Olsen - we had wondered if he had gone to sea - or in fact, gone abroad and had intended to check passenger lists - but will take a while, unless it is indeed 1923 - the year she died - he would have been thirteen/fourteen. Definitely worth checking out though. Thank you Carol and if you do come up with any other ideas - we'd love to hear and we will definitely see you in Hull soon. Lynne and Samantha

Hello Ray,
Thank you for your kind reply and yes, it is the same John Joseph. Mum and Dad met in Harrogate where they were both working, married 1939 in Harrogate and stayed in Harrogate. We came across this and struggled with it - It seems to be that when a single mother registers her child in the father's name, the child is automatically registered in the mother's maiden name also.
Thanks again, linney2019

Hi avm,
We are very new to this and will note to try and link up in future.
We know what happened at Court that day and also about the fact that the boys were placed in an Orphanage When Mary Jane Olsen died, but would still like to find any living relatives - tall order we know, but worth a try just to find any living relatives on Dad's side who may have a photo lying around somewhere. Thanks for the advice.

Hi Carol,
Yes, I realise that this is a very tall order - just living in hope. You are full of good ideas though and contacting Angus Young could yield something. It is all such a mystery that anything would be good. Of course, I realise that Dad sadly left his old life in Hull behind when he came to Harrogate but I don't even know when he came to Harrogate. He returned as a Fegan's boy from Canada in 1934 so I also have some missing years between 1934 and 1939. He joined up in the R.A.F. in 1939 here in Harrogate, but worked here beforehand so may have come here in 1938 or even 1937 which would leave maybe three years where he must have been in Hull, but where and doing what?
I will definitely try that link Carol and again, you are a star.  linney2019

Yorkshire (East Riding & York) Lookup Requests / Finding Dad's Family in Hull - Sissons:
« on: Wednesday 13 February 19 13:47 GMT (UK)  »
Hi all,
I am trying hard (have been for years now) to discover what happened to Dad's family in Hull and why he was put in Linneaus Street Children's Home along with his brother when his Mum died at 32 in 1923. I live in Harrogate, but with my eldest daughter, I have now driven to Hull many times and tried to visualise what their life was like and from what we've learned so far, pretty tough. I am listing here some names of Dad's family that I've found and some of the places in Hull the records show they lived. If anyone, has knowledge of what these places were like or better still, knows of the Sissons family, we'd be very grateful to hear from you. Dad, was killed just after my fourteenth birthday and he never spoke about his family or childhood, so we are, bit by bit, trying to piece it together.
Sissons family: Samuel  1869-1937,Mary Jane Olsen (formerly Thackray) Lived with Samuel however, both legally married to different people throughout, Samuel to Rose Lee 1874-unconfirmed, Mary Jane to Charles Wm.Olsen 1887-1931, Florence Elizabeth Sissons(Married Luben Broughton) 1895-1959, Maud 1896-1906, Rose Ellen 1899-unconfirmed, Samuel Jnr. 1903-unconfirmed. Evening everyone,  Could I ask please - Has anyone got any pictures at all of 8 Warneford Terrace, off Stanley Street, Hull in the early 1900's. My Dad was born in Hull, but orphaned and this address is given - however, I have tried everything and even driven around Hull, trying to find exactly where it was and as yet, I have had no luck. A picture would be wonderful. When I enquired at Hull History Centre, I was told that Hull C.C. took a picture of all the streets that were demolished - however, they did not bother with "Terraces". So, even though there are images of lots of the old streets, there do not seem to be any at all Warneford Terrace.

It gets more and more complicated - I don't know who is to blame for calling them all Charles Olsen, but it's caused a major headache! Prior to Charles William Number 2 as we knew him (the one that Mary Jane Thackray, my Grandmother was married to in 1910) we also found that his father was called Charles William Olsen - in our "shoe box" as Charles Wm. No. 1 - then of course, there was Charles Wm. No. 3 born 1910, and No. 4, born 1913. I reckon there must be loads more........ and all probably in Hull.
Anyway, the one you are talking about has really thrown a spanner in to the works as the age does not match up to the one that was born in Hull (No. 4) so where does that leave us.................
Anything else you can think of would be brilliant,
Thanks Carol,   linney2019

Thank you Carol for looking,
This is so complicated and is the wrong Charles Olsen - I will explain:
1 Charles Wm. Olsen B. 1887 Married Mary Jane Thackray 1910
2 Charles Wm. Olsen B. 1910 Their eldest son (Charles and Mary Jane separated at some point)

Charles Wm. Olsen B. 1887 living with Sarah Elizabeth Mace (Stephenson ) then has a second son and calls him Charles Olsen  also so this is:
3 Charles Olsen B. 1913
This is the one that you have written to me about (1913) It's driving us mad - It is the one that was born in 1910 that we cannot trace, other than he died in 1980. We really don't know what to do and have spent ages trying to sort this out and your efforts are very much appreciated.
