I thank you, Japflakes for cleaning it up, and looking up photographers. He looks much better. Yes that's the photographer I'm looking for. Clinton Cain.
Since posting this question I did more research and found him in the 1900 census living in Springfield, OH. which is about 30 miles from Dayton. He isn't listed in the Dayton City Directory until 1906.
Meaning this photo, IF it is still inside it's original frame, was taken after 1905? The photo was unlabeled and the sitter's identity uncertain. The date the photo was taken was necessary to narrow down my search for his identity.
Also since posting this question, I have stumbled onto another copy of the same photo on Ancestry, attached to a different man than I suspected him to be, in a different branch of ancestors. There is no details given, just the photo attached to a profile. Messaged to person who shared it - but no reply yet.
Thanks again for the help.

Good morning,
I would like to find the active dates for a photographer called Cain's Art Studio in Dayton Ohio?
The address on the frame - NE corner of 5th and Main Sts. Dayton O.
I believe this photo was taken there in the late 19th century.

Thank you

Thank you so much Ian and japeflakes. Huge improvement. Greatly appreciated.

The group photo at his feet has always intrigued me too. His fellow army veterans.
His service: 1857-1860 1st battalion 53rd (Shropshire) Regiment of Foot. 1860-1866 97th Foot.  1866-1878 3rd battalion Rifle Brigade. Held ranks from Private to Sergeant. Served in India and Yemen (Aden).

would love to have the yellow spots removed from this family photo. William was born in Manchester 1841. Seen wearing his Indian Mutiny medal

unless Alfred and Mary had split up - after Rita is born in 1906?
Would Mary and girls go to Hatfield without Alfred?
Mary dies, girls go to orphanage in London? but why would Gwendoline then get married in Hatfield in 1919. What was the connection to Hatfield?

Thanks LM
I have found enough chain of evidence to trace Gwendoline marrying James Rumball in Hatfield, Herts.

Poor Mary Ann Titterton though... she had so many children, and none of them took her in when her husband Joseph passed???? I just cant believe it.

But to go back to the beginning again and find her before her marriage....
The Nightingale family - who are so involved with this family - all the way back to the marriage in 1871.
If we think maybe Joseph and Mary Ann met in 1871 in Reigate, Surrey when he worked there as a cook?
I have found other Nightingales in Reigate, builders, just not Charles William Nightingale and Mary Jane, or Jennie or John.... but there must be a connection between them, the place, and the Nightingales in Tottenham, where the marriage took place? John Nightingale is a builder too

I have really filled out this branch of my tree.

thanks to all of you!

I will be chatting with descendants of Joseph Padgett Clark and Mary Ann Titterton tonight and sharing all this with them. Across the planet, from Canada to Australia, distant distant cousins
