Europe / Re: Bertha SCHMIDT - 1884 - 1945 Berlin Germany
« on: Thursday 07 March 19 20:05 GMT (UK)  »
Hello clancam37,

English is not my first language, it's German. I was born and grew up in Berlin. I hope that you still understand me.

I found the entry Bertha Schmidt in the project "Find a grave". Bertha was buried at the cemetery in Baumschulenweg. This does not mean that she lived in Baumschulenweg (district Treptow). My grandmother lived in Oberschöneweide (district Köpenick) and was also buried in this cemetery.

Today I looked again through the alphabetical name lists of the registry offices Treptow and Köpenick. At the registry office Köpenick I found 2 suitable entries:
- Schmidt, Martha Margarethe Berta née Heese
- Schmidt Berta nee Kahn

Both died in 1945. In the name lists, only the register number is given, which can be ordered for a fee from the Landesarchiv Berlin.

Another way would be to contact the cemetery administration or the district administration. However, I do not know whether these offices provide information. Maybe, I'll call them tomorrow.

It will be very difficult to find Kathe and Harri, because their dates (birth and marriage) are subject to hard blocking periods.

Kind regards
Brigitte

Other Countries / Brazil: Date of death PAUL HARTWIG
« on: Saturday 02 March 19 22:30 GMT (UK)  »
Hello,

some time ago I had made a search query for Paul Hartwig in a German forum. A participant gave me the tip to post my search request in this forum.

I have unsuccessful searched the Brazilian newspapers on memoria.bn and the 7 "Brazil"-volumes with German emigrants.

I'm looking (first) for the date of death of Paul Hartwig, who was murdered about 1925 in Brazil, and (second) for the return dates of his daughter Eva, who my grandmother brought back to Germany in 1926 (according to her own words on a banana steamer). The following is known to me:

- Max Paul Hartwig *18.02.1891/Gräbendorf (district Teltow)
- wife Martha Frieda Hulda Hartwig née Bock *20.05.1899/Schönebeck
- daughter Eva Helene Frieda Hartwig *06.03.1915/Berlin
- son Paul Helmuth Hartwig *11.02.1922/Berlin   oo03.11.1949/Rio de Janeiro
- departure on 28.02.1924 from Hamburg to Santos by ship Cap Polonio
- last place of residence: Berlin

The wife Martha Hartwig is said to have spent some time in prison because she was partly blamed for the murder of her husband.

I am grateful for every tip.

Best regards
Brigitte

Hello clancam37,

are you sure that Bertha Schmidt died in 1945 in Berlin-Baumschulenweg? I have just researched the relevant list of names of the "Landesarchiv Berlin" and have no suitable entry found. In which source did you find this entry?

Kind regards
Brigitte

Europe / Re: Old German Handwriting 1877, help with deciphering please

Hello Rebel,

the maiden surname of Christine is "Drucker".

I read
"Nebenstehend ein Wort gestrichen" = alongsite one word deleted / One word deleted opposite instead of
"Nebenstehend in Wort geschrieben" = Written in Words

Kind regards
Brigitte

All right. If you need help, contact me and send me a private message, if this is possible in this forum. Further tip. Get copies of the "Sammelmappe" as well. The "Sammelmappe" can be a real treasure chest, because it contains all applications and certificates, which are necessary for the wedding.

Good luck!

Hello, Richard,

I have to agree with Karen: Westphalen is quite large, and finding a Marianne Thielmann there would be like looking for a needle in a haystack. In addition, there are very strict blocking periods for civil  registries in Germany:
- Birth register: 110 years
- Marriage register: 80 years
- Death register: 30 years
The use  before the expiry of these periods  is granted only to the spouses, ancestors and descendants of the person affected by the document.

Since the marriage date / year and the place are known, I would advise you to contact the relevant registry office. Today, Wahl is part of the city Köln.  Unfortunately, I did not find an e-mail address for the registry office on the Cologne website. It is probably only possible to contact by telephone or via an online form. The website is also available in English. Possibly, the registry office may require proof that you are a descendant of the marianne.

I hope I could help you a little.

Kind regards from Germany
Brigitte

Hello Murma

I have registered here to find emigrated family members in Brazil. At first I looked around and found your request. For some times, there are broadcasting contributions on the origin of surnames on the radio. Prof. Dr. Udolph, a renowned name researcher, gives free information on surnames sent in. Here is the link for requesting.

https://www.mdr.de/sachsenradio/programm/namenkunde156.html

Maybe you are in luck and your surname will be chosen... English shouldn't be a problem.

Kind regards from Germany
Brigitte
