thanks for your reply ...

The 1851 England census at Weedon Beck barracks, Northants shows the commandant as Arthur Alex Dalzell. I believe this to be the 10th Earl of Carnwath. If I understand correctly he was Colonel in chief of the 88th foot - Connaught Rangers.

Matthew gives his rank as private age as 32 born in Lurgan, Armagh.
Mary age 36, Derryade, Armagh
John age 8, born Guernsey
Thomas, age 6 born Hull, Yorkshire

on a separarate sheet is Joseph, soldier age 15 born Derryade.

The 1861 Wales census shows Matthew (age 40) Ireland and Thomas (age 14) b. Hull together with a different wife, Mary Ann,  and two fairly new children - Emma J and Frederick.

Joseph is also in Cardiff in 1861 at a different address (rather interestingly a brothel) giving age as 24 and born Ireland.

1871 Cardiff - Matthew now age 41, Lurgan with Mary Ann and children Emma J, Edwin F and William H

1881 Cardiff Matthew age 60, Ireland with Mary Ann, Frederick and William but also Joseph returned age 38, born Ireland.

in the 1891 census Mary Ann is a widow.

Down / Marthew Wilson - Lurgan pre 1851

The 1851 census shows my Wilson family barracked at Weedon Beck, Daventry, Nothants. Matthew is a private, inf (antry) - age 32 from Lurgan (Armagh ?) and wife Mary gives her place of birth as (what looks like) Derryade, Armagh.

There are three sons show on the census - all born in different places (consistent with a professional soldier). From 1861 onwards they are no longer in the army and living in Cardiff.

This is my first link with Northern Ireland (it would be a Wilson, wouldn't it :-) ) - and I would very much appreciate any guidance on where to start looking, please.
