Scotland / Re: Can anyone read this record

My Wife's Paternal Family are Cannings, down to Her G.Grandfather. Before that, the surname spelling for Her G.G.Grandfather, and down, was Cannon, all very confusing !

The Family originated from Balbriggan, County Dublin.

Yes, the different scribe entries don't help. The first letter of the Ships? name is very difficult to establish, it might even be two letters. The last three letters, of the name could be  ryi or nyi. I've attempted a quick search on the above Link, but unfortunately I don't presently have the time to work through all the various combinations. I've assumed this record was from WWI, or thereabouts, but I have of course, no confirmation of this. The above Link can expand the timescales, of the various RN Ship entries.

I believe it might help, if the record scan was zoomed out some more, so as to compare the writing of other entries.

Cambridgeshire / Re: Muck Boats

There's a couple of references to 'Muck Boats' via Google Search. One describes Steam Muck Boats, on the Manchester Ship Canal, that transported sewerage. Another describes Dublin Canal Boats carrying clay and gravel.

I assume for the period mentioned, 1840s/50s, that the Ely Muck Boats operated on the Great Ouse, probably powered by sail, and probably carrying similar commodities as mentioned above.

Thank You T1, that clarifies the Cap Badge, I couldn't get My head round, what I thought were reversed Roman Numerals.

Aren't they just standard US Army leggings?

You are correct, ShaunJ. I was misinformed by an article.

Apparently the NY Seventh Regiment acquired the name during the American Civil War, as a good number of volunteers where from wealthy New York Families.

If the photo is a reversed image, then wouldn’t the letters “L” be pointing the other way?

Good point ES, I should have spotted that. The Roman Numerals still don't make sense, as depicted. The New York Seventh Regiment were known as the 'Silk Stocking Brigade', and this can clearly be noted by the trouser dress on the Uniform. However, the Collar letter 'L' reversed throws a spanner in the works, unless it's some other decoration not depicting the Company.
