Hi all

Just wanted to say thank you all for your help. I checked out the death certificate bbart found and you were right, it was the person I had been looking for. Selena did infact have a child (Louisa, born 1914 and no father listed) before she met my great uncle. So I'm considering it mystery solved

Thanks again for all your help

I think you might be spot on, it does look very likely that this might be the person I've been looking for! I'm going to a Scotland's people center next week and will check the death cert then. All your help has been much appreciated

Thank you for all your help, all the information you've found lines up with the details I have so far and some new information too. They did indeed live at Montague Terrace from about 1925 to 1930 and Georges death cert lists his place of residence in 1932 as Great junction street. The Louise you found seems very promising, it doesn't seem unlikely that Selina may of had a child out of wedlock before her and George got married. I'll check the cert whenever I'm next at a Scotland's people center

I do have his obituary from the newspapers but sadly no mention on any children

All your help is much appreciated

Id had a look at the 1921 census of them living in Falkirk, no children listed, it's just the two of them living with Selina's mother, Jane. At least that narrows down the years slightly

I'd came across the age 3 Selina as well and your right, the children's mother is listed as Ada, not a relation as far as i can tell though alot of the family is from Larbert

Both their marriage cert and their death certs list no other marriages for either Selina or George

What was Selina's age when she married in 1918? Her mother's name from the marriage reg?

Have you researched her family? Some clues maybe from her family first names.

Monica

Her mother's name was Jane Cowan, father was Henry Smith. There were no siblings on any of the census I found her, she appears to just be living with her mother until she got married in 1918 at the age of 32

I would consider contacting Scotlands People to ask for a clearer image or help in determining the name. So hard to make out on the image.

See www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk/technical-help/reporting-issues

Monica

Will do, thanks for your help

I did have a look at the electoral rolls trying to find 451 Tollcross Road...but failed. The only listings I came across around the late 1950s and early 1960s were for even numbers on the street, not odd.

Monica

Hi Monica

Thanks for having a look on the electoral rolls. Sounds like her working at that address too could be a possibility, any information is always helpful

Thanks again

Any chance that the children were baptised?  You give no indication as to how many children this couple had nor what the couple's first names were.

The couple was George Allan and Selina Smith. The only evidence of them having children is this signature on Selina's death certificate, which is why Ive been trying to work out the name

Thanks

Have you thought about searching births and including the mother's maiden name?

Do I take it that the daughter's birth name would be Allan?  If so then her mother's maiden name would be different.  You give no indication as to where the couple lived other than central belt of Scotland.

The death is registered in Stirling, is that where they lived or did they move around?

Hi

Yes her birth name would of been Allan and her months maiden name was Smith. I had checked births on Scotland's people with mother's maiden name smith a few times over the years but there were too many options within the possible date ranges (parents were married 1918 and her father died in 1933). None of the names that came up looked similar enough to the signature to justify buying them all.

As for where they lived, my great uncle was born in Larbert, married in Edinburgh and died there too, his wife was born in Kent and died in Stirling. I have them popping up a few times on an electoral roll and they seemed to mostly stay in and around Edinburgh

Thanks
