Ireland / Are 'general' ships manifests available to view
« on: Sunday 26 May 24 20:21 BST (UK)  »
I've found (on Ancestry) details of my ancestors on the Manifests of 'aliens' travelling by ship from Belfast/Liverpool/Eire to USA. For obvious reasons these are all one way records - from UK to USA.

I'm wondering though, are records available for 'ordinary' citizens travelling to and from USA? In other words, just ordinary passenger lists? If so, where?

Thanks.

Thank you, I'll look into that.

It's curious how my small mistake had led to the discovery of a newspaper notice that I would otherwise know nothing about. I've notice this elsewhere in my ancestry searches - other peoples little mistakes provide information that would otherwise be uncovered.

Serendipity I suppose.

Sorry, I'm such a numpty. Yes it's there. I must learn to slow down.

Curious about the Northern Whig article - how can I access that please? The name involved is indeed Gamble, an Uncle by marriage (American Citizen) who went back to America with my Aunt who emigrated.

The John mentioned must have been his father. Curiously he's still listed at 17 Glanworth Drive (iron moulder) in the 1932 Lennon Wylie street directory. Perhaps that's not unusual.

Thanks.

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Identify this street?

This an extract from a Ships Manifest of July 1929.

I can't decipher the street name. It seems to be 17 Slanworth Drive Belfast but I can't find a Slanworth anywhere in the street directories of 1924 and 1932 (Lennon Wylie). I've tried Glanworth and Elanworth too, no luck.

Any offers? Thanks.

Thanks for that suggestion. I've had a quick look at the 1901 Census using initials only and yes, there are results for Asylums.

The outcome is incredibly difficult to understand however and I'm wondering if I'll find an actual link to the persons father, address etc.

Any search results seems to end up with a list of entries by initials, then a bunch of names then initials etc. (why is that?).

Even when I find a pair of initials that matches or even if I eventually found a full name match, the result is not conclusive, because no link to family seems to be evident. If I go to the Workhouse Return pages and look at a few of them, still no link is apparent to family or address.

So, thanks again, but even if my ancestor is there I'm not sure how I could identifier her.

The entries are sad to look at, even more so because they don't seem to record any details of the incumbent's family or address.

Thank you very much for all of those ideas. I'll post back with any success, although I'll just have to accept it when the search goes cold.

Thank you. Very useful to know.

If I thought it worth it, how would I go about finding burial records?

Thank you Softly. I do realise that help is always readily given on this site but I'm really asking for search technique and search site help.

If I've carefully checked every 'hit' on irishgenialogy.ie and can't find a match, surely nobody else is going to either?

Unless there are other sites to check?

Thanks again.
