OK, so I can rule out that one because he is too young to be my William Rimmer.. So the other one maybe?

How could you tell he was 22 years old (is that what you meant?)

Thanks for that Harribobs!
At what age were the men considered too old for the front?  In 1919, William would have been 42..

I have attached the only medal cards that I have found for a William Rimmer (no middle name) in the Manchesters.  You are right of course, that one is in the 8ths.  I have no idea about the other one...
So the only reason that I know there was a W Rimmer in the Manchester 5th at all is from an extract from the Eccles and Patricroft journal - but maybe it has been mis-referenced a bit?  It was from 1915... is it possible for them to change later (medal cards are 1918 ish I think).
Thanks so much for the info on the 5ths, My grandad did think that William was in the territorials so it is still possible that it is him...
Sadly I haven't seen any medals, just these cards, and I don't even know that they belong to him!
If you want higher res pics let me know and I will post the three cards individually.
Thanks again

World War One / Was he in the 5th Manchester Regiment?

The problem that I have is that my Great great grandfather (the story goes that he was in the great war, may have come home with TB and might have ended up walking with a stick...) has a quite common name:
William Rimmer (no middle name I think)

In Eccles alone in the 1901 census there are 2 other William Rimmers old enough to serve in WW1, although is older than the other two (born c1877).  I know for a fact that one of them (his nephew William F. Rimmer) was in the Lancashire Fusilliers and later the Engineers.

William Rimmer was born in Birkenhead and moved to Eccles by 1901.  He is missing from the rest of his family in 1901 and I wonder whether he is serving in the army at that point (one of his brothers, Samuel, was in a barracks in 1901 and the Manchester in WW1).

I have seen some references to W.F. Rimmer in the Lancashire, but also to a W. Rimmer from the 5th Mancester C company being sent home injured in 1915 (in the Eccles and Patricroft Journal).  The medal cards show two possibilities; 301638 and 52937.  301638 got a silver war medal.  Anyone any ideas how I can find out whether either is my William/where he was in 1901/also what is the C company?

Sorry for the large post and thanks in advance!
