The Common Room / Divorce in the 1920's?
« on: Thursday 06 March 08 08:27 GMT (UK)  »
Hi everyone, i have come across some anomalies on the marriage certificate for my Mums Uncle. His name was Arthur Roote and he married, well i know that he married Henrietta Dawson - spinster in 1924, however i have since discovered that Henrietta was in fact Harriet, and that she had married a Richard Hutton in 1910. Harriet had a son by Richard born 1912, my family knew nothing about the 1st marriage or indeed the child (he was raised by his father). The point is that Richard also remarried - stating that he was a bachelor!
My point is, were Harriet ( Henrietta) and Richard actually divorced, or were their 2nd marriages bigamous? I haven't a clue how to trace a record of divorce, can anyone help me?
Oh yes, they were all involved in the acting profession, and i am told that Arthur and Harriet led a somewhat bohemian lifestyle, in fact it seems from the marriage cert that they had been cohabiting before the big day, perhaps a little daring in the 1920's! But then they were living in London at the time.......

Hi does anyone know how the Romany inn of Bampton got its name?
Does it have anything to do with local Romanies, or is it a modern name?
thanks

Ireland / Roote

I am trying to track down Joseph Roote born c1796. He is on the 1851 England Census living in London, he gives his birthplace as Ireland. Has anyone any ideas as to how i might track him down?
His occupation was listed as a Warehouseman. His wife was Margaret also born c1796. They were both in England in 1841, as they were also entered on the census for that year.
With so little to go on, i haven't a clue where to begin.  :( So any advice would be welcome.
thanks,
Irene

Does anyone know if the Suffolk Cady or Cadey family were Travellers or had links to the Travelling community?
Thanks

Hertfordshire / BUXTON - Brewers of Hunsdon
« on: Friday 04 May 07 13:48 BST (UK)  »
Hi everyone,
I am tyring to find exactly where the family of John H Buxton lived in Hunsdon.
I have found him and his fairly substantial household on the 1881 census.
He was living at Bury House.
Anyone know where that was in the village?
His occupation is given as a Brewer.
My interest is that he employed my great grandmother, Annie.
I know that Annie lived at the Lodge, Hunsdon. She was a laundress. My recently found cousin, has a carriage clock which was presented to Annie on her retirement by J H Buxton.
I always thought the Lodge was connected to Hunsdon House, any help appreciated.
Cheers,
Irene

World War One / Re: Call up age for WW1

Could the name Day have been his Mothers Surname?
I have quite a few ancestors from that era named in that way.
It has often helped me track them down.
Good luck
Irene
