Surrey / Re: Dorking Police Station

Have trawled 1911 yet again.
This time I found a name I recognised, finally able to place the Police Station and Cottages.

Dorking Constabulary was an interesting read.

Was it only the Met that said ‘evening all’ ?

Surrey / Dorking Police Station

I know that Dorking Police Station was in Moores Rd (1939) before being downsized to a counter in Pippbrook, according to 1911 census it was then in High St.

Interested in the location of Police Station in the High St.

Old Courthouse, now a dental practice, in 1940’s this was a Police house. Along that part of High St was the Court, under which, had been built an emergency telephone exchange, in case the exchange in London Rd was bombed.

Unable to find old photos of that part of Dorking.

Thank you so much for all the replies, far more information/leads than I ever anticipated.
Plenty there to keep me busy.

Sadly James Spratt left a 20yr old widow and a young baby.

Not sure if this is the correct forum ?

On November 30th 1910 off the No re, a sandbank in the Thames estuary, Gratitude, a vessel under sail, not steam, was run down by cargo vessel SS Lord Stewart.

My ancestor was given as - A B  James Strand Spratt 27 from Ramsgate, b Whitstable, drowned at sea.

Does anyone have an idea what sort of vessel Gratitude would have been ?
My initial thought was a fishing boat, but A B ( Able Seaman) leaves me wondering.

Was an incident like this likely to have made any headlines or, was it not that uncommon ?

Apologies if I have asked this before.

Who would hold churchyard burial records in general and Pauper burials in particular, c1800 - 1900.

Looking at this time at St James, Staple and St Mary the Virgin, Eastry.

On closer inspection it could be DA.

I am never able to upload images, wonder if it's because I use iPad ?

Thanks AJ, very informative and interesting,  great to add to the knowledge base.
Think I'll look for some old images of Middle Deal, get an idea of how they lived.

Cheers,

That's not good enough, did they not realise that 180 odd yrs later we'd be researching all this !

The possible mistake makes sense, just leaves me wondering, why a different church in November, unless of course, as happens now in some areas, one vicar covered several churches, and November 15th was St George's turn . . .
