Given Samuel and Charlotte weren't married, it doesn;t necessarily follow that he died before she got with Richard Crickett. They could just have split up.

Charlotte's "widow" status might not have been the truth either - I haven't found a death for George Lill

I still cannot trace him in the 1901 census ??

Is it possible he'd gone to fight in the Boer War? Quite a few young men of his age are missing from 1901 for that reason

The Thomas on the farm in 1851 was b Bowden. So is this chap - but I think you're suggesting he's not the one  you're after

1861 - Droyslden

Thomas Garwood    25    b Bowden, fustian dyer
Mary J Garwood      27    Wife
Samuel Garwood     12 [probably 2]
Robert Garwood        4  [months]

The Common Room / Re: 2 Crosses and a Capstick, where did they go?

The use of both Cross and Capstick for Ellen's second marriage would usual suggests divorce from rather than death of the first husband, but here you say Richard Capstick definitely died

Think this is his wife and daighter in 1861 - she may not have divorced him until 1865, but she'd already moved on

Robert Norman  30  b Bermondsey, cooper
Maria Norman   56  [36] Dress maker b Kelvedon
Emma Norman    11    Daughter b Harwich

Robert is a witness at Emma Carne's wedding

Robert Lloyd Norman, single
Maria Bright, divorced
Marriage     9 Dec 1867    St. Andrew, Peckham

Emma's future husband was a witness

so it is the Chilmark Martha Matilda. Her brother George marries in Lambeth in 1886. George Williams is a witness

George Carpenter and his bride give their address as Wyvil St

in 1881, who is in Wyvil St but George Williams, stationary engine driver b Woolestone c1852 and wife Sarah b c1848 Abersychan

Maybe he and Martha Matilda couldn't marry?

Hi Debra

Thank you for your reply and information. That would explain a lot of things. I was unaware that George had been a widower for his second marriage, which I was unaware of. The Martha Matilda would tie in with some information I already had. I could still not find a marriage for George to Martha Carpenter, do you think it could have been her second marriage when she married  George ?

Thank you once again.

Kind regards

Martin

No, she's a spinster. Daughter of Thomas Powell (dec)

Just to note there's a Martha Matilda Carpenter baptised in Chilmark, Wiltshire in 1854. Isn;t yours - she's at home with Mother in 1891, having been a servant in Battersea in 1881 Might be worth a second look, as the one on 1891 is at home with Mum and Dad in Wiltshire in 1881 as well. Parents of both are James and Elizabeth

When Bernard and family visited the UK in 1936, he gave an onward address in Cefn, Wrexham.

Any connections you know of there?

And when he left the UK in 1921 he gave an address at 1 The Grove Hammersmith. Have found him in the 1921 census, but mother not there
