Monmouthshire / Re: New Risca Mine Disaster 1880
« on: Saturday 10 January 15 11:42 GMT (UK)  »
Hi, I am helping someone who has a great great grandfather named George Yemm (married to Ann Walding) who died before 1881.  I have estimated his birth as 1838 in Blackeney, Gloucestershire.  My friend descends from his son William H Yemm, b ca. 1870 in Bream and was a coal hewer as was his son William George Yemm (1891-1962).  The latter's son was Ivor Roy Yemm who immigrated to the USA.  Sounds as if you are from the same family.

Hi Winspeare.  George Yemm (1838 - 1880) who died in the New Risca Mine disaster is my great x3 grandfather.  His son William H Yemm had a daughter Violet Yemm in 1910, she was my maternal grandmother's mother.  Unfortunately my grandmother passed away in February last year.  She always wanted to know more about the Yemm side of her family as there was a rumour one of her Yemm ancestors shot and murdered a games keeper.  I haven't been able to find any records to support this.

I would be most interested in contacting your friend.

Berkshire Lookup Requests / Re: Burial Look Up - James and Mary Knight

Thank you Julie for your reply.  Bray Lawn Cemetery outside Holyport is in fact Bray Parish Cemetery as it is now known since it's expansion.  So entirely possible I missed them or they did not have a legible headstone.  I guess a revisit is in order.

Oh, thank you, thank you.

I've been going nuts trying loads of variations and different places of birth etc. I never would have found them without your help.

Census Lookup and Resource Requests / Having Trouble With My Neighbours *COMPLETED*
« on: Saturday 30 November 13 14:40 GMT (UK)  »
I think I need a fresh set of eyes as I must be missing something.

I'm currently researching the Neighbour family of Maidenhead, Berkshire, namely the family of John and Jane Neighbour, nee Willis.  I am having trouble finding them on the 1871 Census.  John and Jane married in Henley in 1862, they had a son Joseph born in Henley in 1863, another son Walter in 1867 in Aldershot, Hampshire and another son Henry born in Aldershot in 1871.

John was born in 1842 in Hambledon, Buckinghamshire and Jane was born in Hambledon also in 1844.

I can find everyone pre and post 1871.

They're probably right under my nose, could someone kindly point them out for me?

any help most gratefully received.

Thank you so much for looking HarryW

I have strong suspicions that they're not where the descendant thinks they are.

Hi Carole

That is a possibility.  However I have my suspicions that they had been living in a different town for some time before their deaths.

The descendant mentioned that a cousin of his was to have originally taken a picture of this headstone, but unfortunately passed away before he could do so.  There are definitely some of his ancestors buried in Bray Parish Cemetery as I photographed the headstone of his great great uncle.

Oh well, more digging to do, if you pardon the pun.

Berkshire Lookup Requests / Burial Look Up - James and Mary Knight
« on: Thursday 21 November 13 13:13 GMT (UK)  »
I am looking for information on where James Knight born 1823 in Warfield, Berkshire, died 1900 Easthampstead, Berkshire and Mary Knight born 1825 Maidenhead, Berkshire, died 1908 Reading, Berkshire, may be buried.

The descendant that contacted me is certain they are buried in Bray Parish (Holyport) Cemetery and they have requested a picture of the headstone.  I recently photographed Bray Parish Cemetery and do not have a James or Mary Knight on my records, it is entirely possible I may have missed them as I had my husband with me at the time and he was moaning about how it may be considered a bit odd to be hanging around a cemetery taking pictures.  So I was a bit rushed.

I would be most grateful is someone would be able to confirm a place of burial or suggest the best approach.

Thanks in advance.

Census and Resource Discussion / Re: Desperately seeking Daisy
« on: Friday 26 April 13 14:24 BST (UK)  »
Oh my goodness I have just found her.  D S born 1884 Cookham Berkshire, previous occupation, governess, a patient at Essex County Asylum.

The Bethlem Archives did offer to send me her admittance and medical records for a fee of £10 and being the noisy cow that I am the offer is very very tempting.  I'm not sure the husband would be as enthusiastic about it though.

Thank you everyone for your suggestions and help finding Daisy.  I feel I know her a little bit better.  Next time I am at the cemetery I shall spend a little time with her.

I received a replay from the Bethlem Royal Hospital Archive this morning.

Quote
Daisy Spencer was admitted to Bethlem Royal Hospital twice: first in 1903 (for seven months), and then in 1911 (from 10 April to her death on 21 August. In the interim, she was resident at Camberwell House (from 15 December 1909 to 8 June 1910) and at Essex County Asylum in Brentwood (immediately prior to her second admission to Bethlem).

So it would seem that her history with mental health issues was a long one and not a sudden spiral into despair I was imagining.

So according to the above she was a patient at Essex County Asylum immediately prior to her last admittance to Bethlem.  Of course on the night the 1911 Census was taken she could have been elsewhere.
